Breast cancer patient: TSA pat-down was ‘humiliating’

A TSA checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. AP Photo/Erik S. …The Transportation Security Administration has apologized for an incident in which a breast cancer patient was subjected to a TSA pat-down that she says she found "insulting" and "humiliating."

Lori Dorn wrote about the experience on her blog. She described how, after walking through an image scanner at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, she was asked by a TSA agent to step aside to have her breasts examined.

"I explained to the agent that I was a breast cancer patient and had a bilateral mastectomy in April and had tissue expanders put in to make way for reconstruction at a later date," Dorn wrote. She said she explained that because of this, she was not comfortable having her breasts touched.

Dorn asked the agent if she could retrieve a medical card from her pocket which described the expanders and included contact information for her doctor. But the agent called over a supervisor who denied the request, and said the breast exam had to take place.

According to Dorn, the supervisor added, loudly enough for other passengers to hear: "And if we don't clear you, you don't fly."

In the end, Dorn wrote, "I had no choice but to allow an agent to touch my breasts in front of other passengers."

In a statement to NBC New York, a TSA spokesman said that Dorn should have been allowed to retrieve her medical card, and that she should then have received a "more compassionate response from our officers, such as an offer on our part of private screening."

The statement added: "The Federal Security Director for JFK personally reached out to the passenger to apologize and learn about her experience to help ensure a smoother checkpoint for passengers in similar circumstances going forward."

The statement also said that the TSA would "be looking at refreshing some training to use this as a learning opportunity."

The incident is only the latest in which the TSA has been criticized for what many see as overly aggressive screening procedures. In June, the agency came under fire after forcing a 95-year old cancer sufferer to remove her adult diaper before boarding a plane.

Yeah, the follow up from the TSA higher ups is, well, this should have happened, blah, blah, blah. #$%$ that! the bottom line is, just like with a city cop, you are at the mercy of THAT TSA twit that has control of you right then. Whatever his/her mommy and daddy didn't give him/her as a child, they are working that out on the American public and it is wrong! Enough is enough!

I just received a humiliating degrading patdown at Raleigh Durham which ultimately left me in tears. The TSA officer and her supervisor were vile, disrespectul, rude robots. When I protested, I was scolded and given a lecture on terrorism. Yeah, I, a 50 year old mom and housewife, am the cause of terrorism. The nasty officer then refused to finish the degrading molestation because she said I had a attitude....I was crying! Her supervisor chastised me and told me "Dont fly then!" This whole patdown / scanner stupidity is security theatre and disgusting. Good job Washington and congratulations to all the sheep who go along with it and allow this to continue.

too many ppl in this country gave up there freedoms after 9-11 in the name of safety and security so now we have this kinda stuff happening all over the place and no one is safe and the terrorists HAVE won
      • Towerwarlock 7 mths ago
Actually the whole TSA patdown and body scanner crap did not start until after 2008 when Chairman Obamao and his evil minions took over. Bush would not allow it. This crap was all ordered by Obama.

what are you smoking Andy? let the TSA do its job so we will remain safe. i believe you have a choice of going thru a scanner or the pat down. i do not care how humiliatng she felt.....next time chose the scanner. or take a train. i want to feel safe when i fly.......and i suspect so do the others on that flight.

You don't get a choice as to how you would like to be screened, when they get a vagina bomber are they going to finger everyone to check for bombs? Statistics don't lie, who is the average "terrorist", granny? Using your brain and profiling individuals is the only way to not waste time molesting cancer patients and more time actually stopping a terrorist from boarding a plane.

The TSA is a joke, they have such lack of knowledge on who is a terrorist and who is not that every time you go to the airport, they treat you as if you are a possible terrorist. I don't know about you, but I am not a terrorist and would like the TSA to actually protect us from the REAL terrorists. Not worry about fingering everyone. Bend Over Ma'am

What happened to the complete xray that see's everything down to the groin?
      • BZ 7 mths ago
She went through it. That just got the TSA more interested in her breasts because the expanders made them look unusual.
      • JACK 7 mths ago
Apparently you can't read. She went ththrough the naked scanner then she was called over for secondary screening.
      • James 7 mths ago
Surely she's smart enough to anticipate this being an issue. Should have just been prepared to ask for a private screening geesh.

Is there a minimum IQ required to work for TSA?
      • Martha Fudgepacker 7 mths ago
Yes its somewhere between that of a gnat and a houseplant.
      • Paul 7 mths ago
No, but there might be a maximum. "If you're smart enough to figure this problem out, we don't want you."

Ah, man! You beat me to it, Paul! Well said.

I traveled when I had my tissue expanders, I was worried as well. (I explained before I even walked through scanners I knew how they'd look.) The medical card should have been enough verification. Similar to people who carry a pacemaker card. You're already self conscious about body image but to be groped is a painful violation. Ignorance!!! A little education goes a long way. Correctly train the staff on medical devices so they know what the hell they're looking at!
      • Dob 7 mths ago
Anyone can print a card and say they have something.....they have to double check. Just like pacemakers and knees(like mine), we all have cards but they still check.

        u should change ur name to d o r k
      • gregh 7 mths ago
do you seriously think tsa would read a card and say ok you're free to go. we're not 100% sure what set off the metal detector but it can't be a gun. your card from your doctor looks legitimate.

The TSA needs to quit finding excuses for the stupid things their employees do when conducting searches. From the article "The statement also said that the TSA would "be looking at refreshing some training to use this as a learning opportunity." They have been using that one every time they get caught doing stupid things like this. One of the reasons I do not like flying any longer and unless its an emergency probably won't.
    • Liz  •  7 mths ago
I personally am sick of TSA saying they are "sorry" after an incident. There have been enough incidents for them to have learned what to do and not do. Even though I'm not trained to be an agent, I have the common sense and courtesy not to make a scene in public with people who have survived cancer! There is a right way to get what you need and the people TSA is hiring are not capable of thinking on their feet. Why don't they try hiring some of the out of work people who worked in the business sector and pay them a decent wage to get the desired results.

I was padded down in England, France every time I step in a airport in the states but never in Israel. Random padding down can help deterring drug smuggling...maybe but have they ever caught a potential bomber in a TSA pad down???
    • duba  •  7 mths ago
So would you get in trouble if you came up to the scanner in only your knickers?
    • stewart  •  7 mths ago
it is time americans take back our rights and end this bull.
    • Jon A  •  7 mths ago
I lost all respect for TSA in 2003 when they removed my class ring and my deceased father's fire fighter badge and insignia from my luggage and said not a single word to me. How do I know they did it, the also removed my aftershave because it had alcohol in it. Now people are not allowed to take their medications on planes. They have done nothing to keep Americans safe. Thomas Jefferson said that one day he was afraid that Americans would be willing to surrender their rights that many died for in exchange for a little false security and I guess those who think the TSA are actually doing something are some of the few willing to give up their rights for false security. The TSA should be done away with and go back to having air marshals on planes. Or at least do what the Israelis do, they have the best security and do it without humiliating people and taking away people's rights---and property!

As I just explained to someone else. Were the perpetrators not protected under the guise of Homeland Security by working for the TSA, and just regular citizens like you and I. They would have been arrested and charged with sexual assault at the very least. My personal feeling is that they should still be brought up on charges. Perhaps some sharp lawyer will be courageous enough to give it a try.
This misconduct needs to be dealt with swiftly and harshly. It is not something which should be tolerated, condoned, or excused. Believe me pain builds character and pain improves the memory. The pain of losing their jobs and facing criminal charges will instill in the others who remain the proper motivation to perform their duties in a professional manner.

So, now just because you havethis authority, it gives you the right to do breast exams? What'll be next? a prostate exam for a victim of prostate cancer?? C'mon!!!! Use some common sense people!

I worked at LAX in a terminal with local and international flights prior to 9/11. I had to go through security every single day. I also have taken lunch breaks with the people doing security and working the x-ray belt. They got stoned on their breaks, instead of looking at the screen where luggage was screened, they were too busy having conversations facing the opposite direction with other employees at the airport, and I often had a box cutter I took home with me for safety since i had to walk 5 blocks from the bus home in a bad neighborhood without anyone giving a #$%$ I know of many other employees who have been recruited by individuals to test security by carrying a non working gun or grenade through security and 9 out of 10 times made it through. I have also set off the alarm walking through, and when buzzed with the wand, simply said it was my belt and never asked to lift my shirt to verify. I did not have high security status and was not allowed in secure areas, but when a friend gave me a ride home one day, he took me through the secure area and we got into a vehicle and drove across the tarmac with airplanes rolling past us to a hanger where he retrieved his car and too me home. Now what point do you think 9/11 happening because of this type of security environment to what we have now is precedented? IT IS NOT!!!!! We have went from one extreme to another. Please open your eyes. What is going on now is bull-crap, and I would not be surprised if it wasn't the same stoned idiots working as TSA agents now. Power-trips do some horrible things to people. You should watch "The Experiment". It is based on a real experiment done to see how volunteers would act in a fake prison setting. It is disturbing to see what happens when everyday people lose it from having a power-trip.

I hope the supervisor was fired as an example to all other stupid security people. I expect not, but i can hope.

You People Do Realize Sexual Assault Is Legal When The TSA Commits It...These TSA agents take Pride in the fact that they have the Power

Now they do full body ex-rays, and the security crew routinely snickers at the video of your body.

We are losing our liberties at an alarming rate. The government is using the perpetual "War on Terror" to inch us ever closer to a totalitarian state. “Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons.” ~ Ron Paul 2012.
