Catholics are buying bankrupt Crystal Cathedral megachurch

Inside the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif (AP)

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County, California is buying Robert Schuller's celebrated Protestant Crystal Cathedral megachurch for $57.5 million, the LA Times reports. The spacious, light-filled house of worship is a "a monument of 20th century modernist architecture," the Times writes.

Schuller, 85, founded his ministry half a century ago and soon began starring in his own TV worship show, "Hour of Power." The church filed for Chapter 11 last year, and under the terms of its bankruptcy agreement can lease back the space for three more years before finding a new home. According to Catholic News Agency, there are more than a million Catholics in Orange County.

Just make sure there is no birth control involved as that is what is really important. Not!

Just to keep things in perspective, the Catholic Church operates the largest charitable organizations on the planet! The Catholic Church has more people in school than any single nation on earth! I happen to be involved with St Vincent de Paul and we help thousands of people, not only with food, but with rent, clothing, house payments, utilities, car repair, counseling, etc, and the people so helped may be of any color, religion, political persuasion or sexual preference. Need is the only criteria. In our single parish we helped over 1300 persons this year and St Vincent de Paul has helped 12 million persons in the United States alone this year, not to mention the rest of the world. This is more people than a number of other entire Church memberships! Many of those who come to us are from other Churches, which Churches refused to help them. The priests and nuns by and large are paid very little yet armies of them go into the worst places in the world (risking life and limb) to help alleviate hunger, disease, poverty etc.
Certainly there are things to criticizes in any large organization but to be fair, it's also a good idea to keep things in perspective!

When church becomes a business, you know there is a problem.
      • 911 6 mths ago
You are so right...#$%$ me off when a hear a man of god claiming church is big business....run people!!!!!
      • paden 6 mths ago
Every church has a board that runs the business.

If a church isn't run like a business, it will become like our government.

I went to that church a few times, good songs, good people, but never a good sermon, always trying to sell a book ,it said in the Bible dont turn GODS house into a market place .
      • 911 6 mths ago
Great post will.....what i find interesting is we got the most important book the bible so why are you sell any others?
      • A Yahoo! User 6 mths ago
I use to see R. Schuller Sr. preach on TV and narrate the humble beginnings of this church...they lost their way to oppulence like many others.

Instead of Church, you should learn Christ teaching that way you'll see the diffrence.

All I have to say about religion these days is - look at what Jesus accomplished with NO MONEY.
      • screwybruce 6 mths ago
not much at all, it was his worthless non working disiples that flourished after his death that wrote all the fiction, Just like L Ron Hubbard
      • Golden Epstein 6 mths ago
Jesus even spoke against collecting money in the church but don't think you will get out of church today without forking over a handful of cash. True believers should volunteer for things like nursery work, facilities maintenance, yard work, etc at their church and not expect to get paid for it.
      • Kay 6 mths ago
He was able to do what he did because he was Jesus. Its a lot harder without him here now, so churches need a little help to build buildings and pay the utilities.
    • susieQ  •  6 mths ago
Schuller's church flopped because, like many modern day churches that are going under, from the little corner church with only 20 members to a big mega church such as this, they have LOST THEIR FOCUS which is the message of Jesus Christ and winning people to salvation through Christ as Jesus said in His last words before He left this earth. That's the reason.
    • Glorious Walrus  •  6 mths ago
churches - regardless of denomination - should reduce their real estate holdings and focus on meeting people's spiritual/personal needs.
      • Lancer 6 mths ago
Kind of hard when you have so many Priests. They should allow married men into the Priesthood and get rid of gays who rap little boys.

        religion...big business !!!!!
      • Angus Scrimm 6 mths ago
Indeed Jojean, indeed it is. The 'problem' with faith, as it were, is not God - it's 'religion'...

Having lived in the area most of my life I can say that Schuller never really was what he portrayed. He has a lavish house and lifestyle, like most overpaid religious leaders. His congregation had more than it's share of snobs. This is a church that represented the worst of money's involvement in religion. Glad to see it gone.
    • Eddie  •  Seattle, United States  •  6 mths ago
Just exactly WHY did this mega church, with its television time, well known and advertised "preacher", the books and other items Schuller hawked,m have to file Chapter 11?

Maybe it was the luxurious and exorbitant lifestyle of Schuller and his cronies?

That place made mega-millions! And aren't churches tax exempt?

I have yet to see a "preacher" of this noteworthiness without a Rolex and a diamond ring on both hands and you can be sure he wasn't driving a nine year old Ford Focus or living i n a 1700 square foot, $140,000 home and his vacations were not at a theme park and a Super 8 motel!

These guys are con artists and snake oil dealers! I have no sympathy for them, nor for the fools that hand over half their paychecks to them for "salvation"!

How is it that churches who purport to be "for the people's good" and purport to be doing the best they can to comfort and aid their parishoners wind up hoarding millions of dollars in money, art treasures, gold and other valuables while their members often barely scrape by? Then, on top of that, the members sacrifice hugely to give more to these leeches and think that God approves of that. Personally, I think God is mightily insulted at the rip-off mentality of the established clergy. For myself, I think a few well-placed lightning bolts would do the clergy a world of good.
(yes, I do know some very unselfish and righteous ministers who are truly there for the right reasons. They're there, most assuredly and I thank them for their dedication. it's the con-artist, rip-off jerks who tick me off!)

Well................ At least they can't throw any stones.
    • Drago  •  6 mths ago
What a waste of money. If I were a member of that diocese I would certainly question "why". As a side note, Schuller should be put in jail to rot the rest of his life. He squandered millions of dollars for his own personal usage. Another typical phony evangelist who preyed on his followers.

If a Church is run correctly - How can it go bankrupt??
watch out for the money grabbers
    • My Two Cents  •  6 mths ago
I must admit one thing, that many if not most of the Catholic Cathedrals are beautiful. So I must ask, why would they buy this monstrosity?
    • CalAbama  •  6 mths ago
Another church that has lost its way ... focusing on things - external symbols of success - instead of internal things that really matter... people's hearts.
    • whiffer  •  6 mths ago
I belong to this diocese, and have watched them close schools and parishes over the last several years. I want to know now where the year getting this money when parishes continue to struggle.

Schuller...arrogant, self-important, filthy rich--even in this bankruptcy, positively lost.

I don't think Jesus would be comfortable surrounded by such finery. And let's not mention how many hungry children there are in that same county.

A belief in God does not require a building in which to practice that belief.
