Despite violence, fewer Mexicans crossing into U.S.

Illegal immigrants being deported in Ariz. last year (Jae Hong/AP)Illegal immigration from Mexico has slowed dramatically from a few years ago as would-be border crossers are finding more economic and educational opportunities at home.

That's the conclusion of a New York Times feature by Damien Cave, which points to research that suggests only 100,000 illegal immigrants from Mexico, including visa violators, came to America last year. That's down from from the 525,000 who came over each year between 2000 and 2004.

But there's another possible factor behind the diminished stream of Mexican immigrants crossing the U.S. border: the brutal drug wars in Mexico, which have claimed many would-be immigrants as collateral casualties. Mexico has faced surging violence since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the drug cartels in 2006. Though the country is now far more violent than it was then, it's proven even more dangerous to try to leave it. Many potential immigrants are electing to stay in the country rather than risk getting caught in the cross fire.

In the past year, pits of human remains have been found near the U.S. border, and authorities say the bodies were those of migrants who were captured by drug cartels, or double-crossed by cartel members who promised to guide them into America. As we reported at The Lookout, human smuggling is now completely dominated by drug cartels--a marked departure the earlier model of a small network of freelancing coyotes. Beefed-up U.S. Border Control presence has also pushed illegal immigrants to dangerous Arizona crossings, where hundreds each year die of dehydration.

But Cave suggests in his New York Times story that the longer-term economic and demographic trends in Mexico may produce a smaller cohort of illegal immigrants to the United States in the years ahead. Chief among these trends, he writes, is the quickly rising economic opportunities at home and a lower birth rate. The economist Roberto Newell told Cave that Mexico's per capita gross domestic product and income have both risen 45 percent since 2000, even as the average birth rate continues to fall, and now stands at about two children per family. And meanwhile, the recession in the United States has narrowed the gap between what an undocumented worker could earn here and what he or she could earn by staying in Mexico.

The Mexicans don't have to go anywhere because the jobs are coming straight to them through outsourcing.

Enablers........... GOOD word. "Enablers for the illegals"............ I'm thinkin' that there ought to be a voluntary tax for all those that feel that ILLEGAL aliens should be cared for. C'mon all you "enablers"....... practice what you preach. If charity begins at home, let's start with YOUR home. If you would just sell your home and give all that money AND the money you put away for your kids college funds to the voluntary tax, you'd be working towards a meaningful solution. If this is an issue that is truly "dividing" the country, than the 50% of you that want to take on the woes of the world should be able to do it instead of just talking about it. I'm dropping my Senator a line right now to see if we can get an "enabler" tax going!!!

The birth rate in Mexico is 2 per family. Here the average is much higher.

Mexicans need 2 stay in their country and face their problems, if that means lynching criminals and politicians, then so be it, but fucx clean it up, don't run from it, or worse yet bring it here....we have our own politicians need lynching....we'll eventually get around to it.

What are you, some kind if anal granny Jay ? USA- United States of America. Not US of Canada or US of Mexico or US of latin America. America has always been synonomous with the USA.

Mexico is not in america but rather North America. America is not a continent, but here are the seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antartica. Last but not least america is a english word found in the english dictionary as a noun.

The border problem with U. S. and Mexico is caused by demand. It appears that there are no takers of the jobs handled by Mexicans inside the U. S. It is that simple. Greed is another issue. Businessmen want mor profit by employing people who can manage to live on less than

Check out Stephen Colbert, He posted about the jobs available that typically are worked by Mexicans, only 7 Americans applied. Takes more than that so you can get a head of lettuce for 1.50.

If the cross border immigrants has diminished, it is because the U. S. seems to be experiencing an implosion in the words of Sunjay- meaning there is less demand for outside labor, primarily because most of the WORK HAD ALREADY BEEN OUTSOURCED ACROSS THE PACIFICPACIFIC.PACIFICPACIFIC..jhave been outsourced have been outsource3d ACROSS THE pACIFIC. eaning

There would be no fruits, vegetables, wine, and many other things available to Americans if it was not for the Mexicans, legally or illegally in this Country. The Mexican people are hard working individuals! They are doing the job no one else in this Country wants!!!!!

But they have moved into other work areas and driven once living wage jobs down to minimum wage jobs. The lack of living wage jobs now available has killed our economy.

The Hispanic race is already becoming the number 1 race in our country, yet we even still allow the illegal ones born here gain citizenship, called anchor babies, and we dole out billions a years on the illegals and their children, subsidizing everything from birth, to food, housing, etc. Our own citizens do not receive this, cannot receive this, as we have thousands now homeless from job losses, etc. Yet you losers running this country want to take from Medicare (seniors) and Social Security (money we taxpayers contribute to) and keep 3 or 4 wars not winnable and give billions more to multiple Middle Eastern countries, then tell our own people to go to hell ! I hope we have a revolution soon; if not, we are on the brink of collapse and becoming third-world status !

While I agree with your post in general, I sure wish that you and others who post here would learn to use correct grammar and the SPELL CHECK. It embarrasses most of us when we are complaining or ranting about illegals when they can probably spell better than many of the posters here. PLEASE try and at least SOUND educated when you post.
      • wiser 10 mths ago
Once the baby is born here, that person is a legal American citizen.
      • BobbieM 10 mths ago
Oh Alan, you poor deluded soul. You believe that most of the illegals aliens could spell better than many of the posters here? The illegal aliens coming here can barely speak a few words in English, let alone grasp the nuances of English grammar and spelling. Have you seen the tests scores of schools in areas predominated by illegal aliens?

I'm all for helping others but I will NOT do it at the cost of my own family and countrymen. America could have developed plans to help the Mexican government rid itself of the drug cartels and institute better economic plans and America would have spent less money than it already has on illegal alien health care, public education, job loss (which amounts to a loss in taxes and thus government revenue), and criminal activity.

As a white male, let me tell you tea partiers something. You WILL be outnumbered soon, so you better play nice. People have long memories and they will remind you of that at the voting booth one day.

Unfortunately, The United States cannot let every person over here, for an easier shot of survival. I'm sorry it's that crude, but we can't take care of everybody and it's not our fault they are coming over here because of their own countries being third world, etc. America needs to start focusing on it's born citizens(i dont care what race) instead of trying to cater to everywhere else.
    • Guyde  •  10 mths ago
In case readers don't already know this, here in California, the safest, most accomodating organizations for illegal immigrants are the county welfare departments. There, illegal immigrants freely admit to their status, free from any worries of repercussions; confidentiality laws -- and county welfare departments' internal policies -- insure that those departments remain sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.

    • Jim Ketchel  •  10 mths ago
How funny is this article. The New York Times knows how many illegals come into america. RIGHT. You can find more then 100,000 illegals in just Los Angeles. Do you notice how they post dated back to 2000-2004 as a higher amount of illegals? Yes they were probably down there in texas with obama saying how safe our borders are now and how few are coming this way. 1 illegal immigrant is 1 to many . Try them and send them back with a promise of capital punishment if they return PERIOD, Make it a PRESUMPTIVE SENTENCE for all. Period no litigation at the tax payers expense for 20 years just one PRESUMPTIVE sentence meaning if you do it this is the price you pay PERIOD no loop holes. Remember this people Lawyers write the laws for the USA and they include loophole for further litigation by their collegues so they can make more money and cost you the tax payer more money. If they write a airtight law they will eliminate a job for their buddys further down the road.
