Ed Dept calls out colleges that hiked tuition by 50 percent

Bates College (Pat Wellenbach/AP)The Department of Education has listed the 5 percent of colleges that hiked their tuition by the largest percentages over the past three years. The new listing is part of an effort to make college pricing more transparent to young people.

Northern New Mexico College, Georgia State University, San Diego State University, and Florida State College at Jacksonville topped the list with tuition increases hovering around 50 percent since 2007.

But many public universities are still much more expensive than those doing the most egregious tuition-raising. You can use the Ed Department tool to find out which colleges--private or public--are most expensive overall, even after scholarship and grants are taken into account. The University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio topped the public universities' most expensive list at $24,192 in net costs per year for an in-state student. Pennsylvania State University, Miami University at Oxford, Rowan University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and University of Guam followed closely behind.

A pricey four-year private college will set you back by a lot more, however: Bates, Connecticut, Middlebury, Union, and Colby Colleges all had tuitions of more than $50,000 per year, including fees and room and board. After scholarships and grants are taken into account, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., is the most expensive, at $39,672 per year.

In-state tuition has jumped 7.9 percent just this year, according to a recent study. According to data from the National Association of Budget Officers, 18 states cut spending for both K-12 instruction and higher education in fiscal 2011, by $1.8 billion and $1.2 billion respectively. But proposed cuts for the next fiscal year are much steeper: They total $2.5 billion for K-12 schools--and more than $5 billion for higher education.

Duh - Your CPA is an educated person, which leaves your point moot.

Maybe a college or university eduction will begin to mean something again.

Anyone know how much money these colleges are hoarding??? Would be interesting to get some info on this.
      • Peter Brendt 9 mths ago
Funny thing, I wondered the same and found, their balances are on public record. It's not much, they hoard, a number of them are in fact deep in debt.
    • Peter Brendt  •  9 mths ago
Would be interesting to see it in absolute numbers. Some colleges and universities cost more than double the tuition before the hikes and those are not in the list because they didn't raise it this time.

How about eliminating the tax exempt status for university tuition aboove a certain level. The excess money is not being used by the institution to directly educate the student paying the tuition...it's being plowed in unrelated things or hoarded. The governement should not subsidize the victimization of these students.

College is now big business. College degrees are worthless nowadays because everyone has one. We are all told we can live the American dream and become well-educated and successful. Truth is, some people are just not meant to go to college. But by exploiting our hopes and dreams, colleges are now an extremely successful profit generating machine. I got a 4 yr degree and did not figure this out until the end. I was in Bachelor level classes with people who did not even understand high school concepts. The school put us in "Learning Teams" 30% of time so that we could all "work together and learn real-life skills", umm yeah, you mean level the playing field and float these losers by? These people were pushed through and passed with low C's and D's....people that should not have been there in the first place but were lied to in order to get that financial aid.
      • Anthony B. 9 mths ago
Agreed. Financial aid should only be available for 3.5 GPA or higher students.
      • Vicky_Licky 9 mths ago
@Jim: GPA does not reflect how intelligent a person is. It simply reflects in most cases, especially in college, how well you perform in an exam. While it is true that not everyone belongs in college, I think that by allowing only those who have a certain GPA we would lose good talent. Grades are extremely subjective, and in many different majors, it is even inflated. So someone who, as Samantha said, cannot even understand basic high school concepts may actually end up with a GPA higher than a 3.5 in a lot of cases. Like I said, how well you perform in an exam is not indicative of how intelligent you are. I know people who have better GPAs than I do, and they don't even know where they live or how to get there. They just have a better system for memorizing facts. But you know, even though I don't have a fancy system to memorize things, I do actually know and understand them, even if my GPA is lower.

@Samantha: What school did you go to anyway? Sounds to me like you went to one of those made up universities. I go to a public, not-for-profit university, and there is no such thing as a "learning team" there. Actually, I would recommend you watch "College Inc". It is an eye opening documentary.

Now that everybody is being told to go back to college and get an education.... which won't matter because there will still be crap tons of people coming out with degrees that are less useful than toilet paper.... the colleges are going to raise tuition!!! greeeeeeed.
    • critic  •  10 mths ago
Now that is how to do it. First it is 34% high school drop out. And now those who can read and "gradate" and want to go to college face 2 major problems. 1) tuition 2) fighting with illegals for a class. The illegals WILL get financial aid and priority over a citizen. At least that is how it is in California. A dumb nation is getting dumber. And we wonder why China, India, Brazil, Japan, 75% of Europe, ...............
    • Tommy Corn  •  10 mths ago
Unless of course if you are an illegal..... then you get to go on the back of tax paying citizens
    • critic  •  10 mths ago
      That is "graduate".

What about college's that fail to disclose their partnerships on application forms. Then shares students personnel information such as student Id numbers, academic records, and financial information with a bank from out of state completely disregarding students consent or knowledge.A college that subjugates and obscure student consumers ability to make informed decisions.I did apply to college to share personnel information with a bank I did not choose.Yeah I am bit*hing at you Temple College, Temple TX 76504.
      • AngryoungRedhead 9 mths ago
You should copy your post and send it to the English department of that mean old college. That'll punish them for sharing your info with a bank. They'd be embarrassed forever!

A college level economic bubble burst with students defaulting on college loans is on the horizon.
      • Sam 9 mths ago
Except that college loans aren't subject to bankruptcy protection, so even if you default, you are still screwed.
      • Vicky_Licky 9 mths ago
        Dave, I agree!
      • Dave 9 mths ago
I am already feeling this! I have 208 college hours and the only job I've had as a material handler job one year. Of the last 7 years I have had to work temp or for myself. Most of the jobs interviews eliminated me because lack of any lengthily employment. Best I have done with my education was 14.50 an hour as a materials handler. I have a f'n robotics degree some manufacturing engineering classes.

The tuition at our state universities increased dramatically due to the fact that all illegal aliens will now enjoy in state tuition rates. So, they get to pay less and we get to pay more. Can anyone guess who runs my state? That's right - Democraps!
      • LadyNola 10 mths ago
The Democratic did not let them into this country. It was cheap labor and the Republican needs for greed.

The four year college is dead, and schools as corporations greed killed it. Once employers start to recognize that a community college or online degree can be just as useful for a career prep, enrollment should decline. I personally loved college, but gone are the days you could work a summer to get the tuition for that year, and graduate with only a few thousand dollars in debt.
    • Jack  •  11 mths ago
Yep, and yet the administrators give themselves raises and lay off custodial and food-service workers. And a president or chancellor gets a free home with all bills paid, a leased car, and free lawn maintenance. Anyone who thinks a college is an educator first and a business second needs to really wake up.

Going to a 4 year school is a total waste of time and money. Do your first 2 years at your local Junior College. It's about a third of the price and you will take the same 100 and 200 level courses offered at any state university. Use the time to save money and figure out what you want to do. Then transfer to a 4 year university to get your bachelor's degree. You'll save more money by not having to take extra electives and zero in on the classes you need for your major and minor. Take the time you'd waste in your electives and do an internship to make contacts and help secure a job when you get out. Can't find a job right away? Join the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and yes, even the military. Let the government pay most or all of your loans with only 2-3 years service. It looks great on your resume when you get back and can be a big step up in a competitive field or if you decide to go to graduate school. If you are clear-headed about your education, you can do it much cheaper.
