Even in New York City, sex education is controversial

Students in an abstinence-only after-school program in Florida (AP)A group of parents and religious leaders are outraged that New York City will soon require comprehensive sex education in middle school and high school.

After The New York Post obtained some workbooks that may be used in the classes, the curriculum has attracted national media attention, with Fox News calling it "shocking." The workbooks ask high school students to jot down different brands and prices of condoms, and middle school students are asked to rate the relative risks of pregnancy and STDs that different sex acts carry.

Sex education experts told the Post that such methods are not unusual. About half of New York City's public high school students say they are sexually active, and teen women in the city have sky-high rates of STDs. A third of the women diagnosed with chlamydia in the city, for example, are between 15 and 19. It makes sense to teach them before they get to high school how to have safe sex, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has argued.

"We have a responsibility, when you have an out-of-wedlock birth rate and a sexually transmitted disease rate that we have in this city, to try to do something about it. Shame on us if we don't," Bloomberg said, according to the Daily News.

City officials stress that students will be taught that abstinence is the best way to avoid pregnancy or disease, and that parents may pull their kids out of the birth control part of the mandatory classes. But parents say they want separate abstinence-only classes that they can put their children in instead. Some Republican state senators say they support that plan, but it's unclear if they can or will do anything about it.

On the federal level, abstinence-only education has fallen out of favor, after an independent review of several programs found that they did not reduce sexual activity and in fact, lowered condom use among participants. (China, however, is looking into creating its own abstinence-only programs with the help of James Dobson.) President Obama eliminated all federal funding for abstinence-only programs in 2009, though $250 million of it was restored as a bargaining chip during the health-care reform debate. The federal funds sometimes went to religiously affiliated programs that emphasized tactics like "virginity pledges," where the participants pledge to remain virgins until marriage.

I blame society for the plight of our kids. Our economy requires ev1 to work, some even two jobs, this leave's very little time to instill value's into kids. Add to this parents promoting being single, having sex when you want to/or if it makes your life better is just shameful. If a person has a kid they are responsible for their proper upbringing plain and simple. Family values are now gone because of the teachings of a liberal education system which pushes GOD out of the classroom, pushes respect for country out of the classroom, respect for the teacher's out of the classroom is the main reason these kids are so screwed up. When the teacher's in the 50/60's taught in class the worse thing that could happen to a kid was being sent home with a note from the teacher, today kids have been known to throw the teacher out the window and they don't care one way or another that they did. Values are not being instilled into kids at home so they have no values in a social/education environment of a classroom. Parents are more concerned with what a kid wears and if they have the latest cell phone more then if they listen to the teacher and are respectful.., they equate disrespect with being out spoken and high strung.. Oh and add ADD or ADHD to the mix..good way to push off properly raising the child to say they have a problem and just DOPE THEM UP works for these lazy self centered parents... Oh some kids have legit problems but on avg not as many as being promoted.. easy way out for a doctor not wanting to deal with parenting problems (parents attack doctor's who tend to sway against them) and DOPING them up is an easier way to control kids who get out of control.. screw the long term problems worry about today..right,,WRONG.. Time to bring back stay at home mom's, dad's that care about being home on time to spend time with their kids instead of working late cause the boss has a deadline.. If you need something done allow for the extra time, don't set limit's on others to make yourself look good. Need I go on?

Sage S has it right... The human race doesn't need a bunch of anal retentive academics trying to assist our children with procreation. It's like Dr. Ruth; how did she ever get laid with a face like a catchers mitt!

WHAT ABOUT THE EARLY "SEX EDUCATION" CHILDREN RECEIVE?
Children are exposed from their earliest years to sexualized images through advertising and television. Those sexualized images include young children moving like adults. This distorts every other message they get from parents, teachers, and other responsible adults in their lives. Advertisers and the media should be challenged to fulfill their adult (fiduciary) responsibility to protect and guide children in healthy behavior and relationships without monetary benefit. They should wait for children to grow up. (The claim that all they're doing is "grooming" children to be good consumers and that it's a matter of freedom of speech is utter bunk). And then sex education for early teens would work (much better if not perfectly).

"It's so much better," recommended our local profligate, Ms. Cacky Chebs, "for kids to get all they need to know from their friends, tv, and the internet. Heaven knows, how else are Americans gonna have a group of unmarried parents that everyone else can go "tsk, tsk, tsk,' over and feel wonderfully superior about? Knowledge is dangerous, and only the well-educated children of the upper class should know all the right things."

There are now 7 billion people on the planet. I wonder how that happened?
People are going to have sex. So it is best they are equipped with the relevant information they need to make an informed decision, to protect themselves and others.

Nothing is wrong with teaching abstinence, but to be so deluded as to believe teaching abstinence only will solve the problem, is pure lunacy.
Teaching someone proper driving, does not increase the likelihood that they will speed.
So why is it different when this logic is applied to sex?
To say teaching people the proper way to protect themselves against STDs and pregnancy, is downright idiotic if not morally reckless.

How about teaching these animals how to read and write first? Dept of Education is a total failure.
    • Doug  •  3 mths ago
How about we just teach kids the biology involved? Do they need to know how sex can lead to pregnancy? Do they need to know how STDs are spread? Yes. Do they need to know what a Dirty Sanchez is? Do they need to go condom shopping? Do they need to learn how to #$%$ properly? I dont think so.If you just give kids the facts, the science, then they can figure out for themselves how to be safe about whatever they choose to do. If you just tell kids "dont do this, but do this instead", they're probably going to end up doing it, even if they wouldnt have before.

There is nothing cuter than a babyseat in the teenagers car parked at a high school. You know that reality show called "Sixteen and Pregnant"? There is a new spinoff called "Fourteen and Knocked-up...AGAIN."

Y'know that reality show called "Sixteen and pregnant

right wingers point of view -
no birth control = no sex = no reality

what's shocking is the far right adult population denying what is in their face & homes -
lets use sarah palin for the prime example here -

Isn't it interesting how Republicans say how they value education, yet when schools attempt to actually do their jobs the Republicans get their panties up in a bunch. Comprehensive sex education is a must!

Look at the European Nations they have sex education from the day students start school and their teenage pregnancy rates are extremely low. The US for a developed nation has the highest rate and it's not a surprise and it's the highest in the states that are conservative.

The more liberal states where there's a chance for sex education the numbers aren't as high.

Just further proof of the hypocritical beliefs of the conservative movement!
