First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV

    AP110516057251

Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says.

There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.

The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years--raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment.

Although Brown's story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there's no way Brown's treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage "cure research," according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago.

You can watch Brown talk about his cure in this CBS video report.

This article has been updated to include more context about why some people are immune to HIV.

Why can't they find a cure for cancer. They have been working on it for many many many years, and no cure.
    • Phina  •  Manila, Philippines  •  3 mths ago
I'm glad that there is such a cure, well then let's hope and pray for those people who are doing their best, to be guided by our Dear Lord that they can discover more ways in making such medicines to help in the aid of those already suffering.More Power and God Bless.

AMEH from Lagos. HIV is spread in quite a few different ways and anyone irrespective of faith or 'righteousness' can contract it. This is positive news which everyone who knows a loved one who is suffering from or has ever lost to it should be pleased about. At least there is some progress being made to find a cure!

This is interesting. I unwittingly had a prolonged exposure to a partner who was unaware of his HIV+ status for about 2 years. When he revealed that to me, I was certain that I would have been infected. But, miraculously, I was not. You can imagine how blown away I was. I wonder if my Danish heritage has anything to do with that. I am still careful, mind you. But it sounds like they should do a study on folks like me who did not contract the virus in these types of situations. Fascinating.

I also had the same experience as you Thomas. I'm not O neg

I have always been sceptical of the medical view that this particular virus could be claimed to be 100% affective in infecting people so this post certainly affirms that my suspicions were not misplaced... Good health in the future, Thomas, and thanks for posting.

Its not about being gay or being black or white its a disease and it does not discriminate,Its about, resources, prevention, education and compassion for the people who are living with it regardless. Do not be cold hearted and judgemental, lets stand together and help eradicate this awful disease.

HIV= drugs, gay, or irresponsible behavior.
      • Jasmine 6 mths ago
Screw yourself, Kates. First off there are people who were born from an unknowingly positive mother who couldn't get the treatment to protect her baby. There are also tons of other reasons why someone could get it. If someone is addicted to hard drugs where they need to use a needle it is sad that in the need to get a fix, or forgetting about the risks of needle sharing because they are high. Also, there are still many misconceptions about how to get HIV, especially among people who are very addicted to drugs as they tend to have less of a chance of having been through school or have even done well while there. HIV is not a gay thing. Studies have shown that African American women are now have the highest rate of infection in the United States. As for the irresponsible behavior I think it's very unfair that one single act so simple as sex can drastically change your life for the worse. It's so unfortunate. Many people still don't know a lot about HIV or how exactly you get it. Is it their fault? No not at all. I feel sorry for you Kates. Truly.
      • Chrissy 6 mths ago
There are many ways to end up with HIV. Not only drugs, being gay or irresponsible behavior, people in the medical field are susceptible to the disease as well, being born with the status and other incidents can cause this. You need to be informed you could be open to it as well by just sticking your finger into a telephone booth to get money back, because at one point there were people putting dirty needles in the coin receptacle.

The cure for Hiv has been there all along. The government has it but why would they want to release it to the public? The world is increasing in population and they need a way to control the population.. If you think i am crazy go look at Bill Gates and Al Gores speeches on Population Control. They dont want the common man to have this medication
    • A Yahoo! User  •  Chelsea, United States  •  6 mths ago
So it this caucasion marrow transplant a cure for other races as well, or is this a cure for white people only? I'm not trying to be funny, the article made it a note worthy comment, so as an educated Black person I want to know if this 1% can cure all people with HIV?
      • Sara 6 mths ago
Fantastic question. I am curious if they will research to find these people with a natural immunity and synthesize the proteins to eventually end the disease.
      • Jessica McKay 6 mths ago
I assume that it would cure anyone, The immunity that they have has something to do with their ethnicity, But i wouldn't think it could only be used for caucasians. I would hope they'd do more to research whether this is a feasible way to rid humans of HIV/AIDS, but i think that pharmaceutical companies will be dragging their feet on the research because of the tremendous potential loss of money that they wouldn't be making if no one needed their HIV drugs.
      • Chance 6 mths ago
Chelsea... it should already be very clear to you that white people in our country have very little desire to help blacks... there are feeding programs for $10 a month that cure starvation in third-world nations like Africa. We should save as many lives as possible (not to mention promote self-sustenance by building infrastructure with good fiscal oversight and promote quality government for these impoverished people [through propping healthy government of peacekeeping]). This would be money better spent -- better spent compared to a lot of things first-worlds choose to spend their money on instead of hoarding all their superior money and resources to shelter themselves up like greedy, nationalistic, environment-abusing, land-hijacking European colonists.

For $8400, we can provide enough food to last a lifetime (70 years) for someone dying of starvation! The pursuit of science and technology in wealthy nations at the demise of the environment and expense of the third world (our hurtful policies towards them and our failure to assist them) is one sorry state of affairs.

Okay my thing is as the article says..due the bone marrow transplant...but what about the rest of those people who cant have a bone marrow transplant...sort of false hope if u ask me...when u can say the miracle pill or treament is out then thats really something to be excited about not just 1 person..who got lucky...he may be in the clear but my heart is crying for the millions dying and suffering
      • DavidB 6 mths ago
Don't you see how this is a major breakthrough? With the proper research this single incident could turn into something really revolutionary.

Good news and hope it will reach the african continent soon.

This miraclous HIV cure for Mr Timothy Browmn is indeed a miracle and a welcome development. In as much as the transplant is dear and unafordable to most of the 33.3 million HIV patients, this discovery is a ray of hope.To God be all the glor.y

It is sad that we can fly to the moon, create nuclear weapons and accelerate particles to beyond the speed of light, but we cannot figure out how to get rid of a microscopic organism. Depressing really...
