Four-year-old U.S. citizen deported to Guatemala

A four-year-old girl--and American citizen--was deported to Guatemala by the U.S. government after being detained with her grandfather at Dulles International Airport.

New Yorker Emily Samantha Ruiz and her grandfather were returning from a trip to Guatemala on March 11, when a U.S. Customs officer noticed that the man had an illegal entry from the 1990s on his passport, according to the Daily News' Erica Pearson. He was taken into custody, and Ruiz's parents, illegal immigrants living in New York who risk deportation if they went to pick their child up, were eventually told they could either let Emily be sent back to Guatemala with her grandfather or have her placed in a juvenile detention facility.

The family's lawyer said they intend to send someone to pick their daughter up and bring her back to the United States.
