Huge chunk of ice breaks off Greenland glacier

Petermann glacier in July (Hubbard)A block of ice four times the size of Manhattan has split off from a Greenland glacier and melted--an event so dramatic that it's shocked the scientists who study the area.

Alun Hubbard of Aberystwyth University, Wales, said he was rendered "speechless" when he saw the now much smaller Petermann glacier. The break happened in 2010, but this is the first time photos have been available.

"Although I knew what to expect in terms of ice loss from satellite imagery, I was still completely unprepared for the gob-smacking scale of the breakup, which rendered me speechless," Hubbard said in a statement. The scientist said no similar event has happened in Greenland since recorded observations began in 1876.

Petermann glacier in 2009 ( Jason Box/Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University)Scientists now worry that another block of ice--about two times the size of Manhattan--is preparing to break off, according to the New York Times.

Ohio State University Professor Alan Box, who also studies the Petermann glacier, told the Times that observers do not know whether the region's rising water and air temperatures contributed to the deterioration of the ice. Researchers they don't have data that goes far back enough in time to document the water temperature beneath the ice.

Greenland's ice sheet may be melting at the rate of 400 billion tons per year. According to MSNBC, Greenland has lost "592.6 square miles of ice between 2000 and 2010."

O"bumma asked Big Al Gore if he knew anything about it,an he responded: I hired David Copperfield to make the ice field to disapear.Pretty cool trick Huh!

A few ice cubes in a glass? No problem. Dump a few trays in and the glass overflows before they melt.....these sheets are as big as continents - the comparison to "ice cubes" is .....well.......The earth is mostly covered by water...

I'm doing a Science Fair project on global warming, and believe me, I will find results saying that catastrophe is just about due, if not overdue.

YEA..."will find" as in pre-intended,some scientific method. But right in step with the LIB-WEENIES mindset!

You're right, Alchemist. All science is actually a scam. Your computer runs on magic smoke. Car engines are filled with hamsters on treadmills. Televisions actually grow on trees in the woods.

Climate change is cyclical. Always has been, always will be. It's not caused by higher levels of CO2 thanks to a little touted law of physics called the Beers-Lambert Gas Law. As the concentration of a gas (CO2) increases, its ability to absorb light (infrared) decreases logarithmically. When CO2 is at 150ppm it is already absorbing about 90% of the infrared radiation. In other words, adding an additional 1000ppm won't have any significant effect on infrared absorption. 150 ppm is also the minimum required for plant growth.
Climate change is actually caused by gravity of all things. Just follow me on this one. The Sun is affected by the planets the same way the tides on Earth are affected the Sun and the Moon. The orbit of Jupiter (11.86 years) controls the timing of the ~11 year sunspot cycle. 11 years is the average, it varies from 9 to 13 years due to the influence of the other gaseous giant planets. Liquids and gases all have similar flow characteristics, so just as the tides (and atmosphere) on Earth are affected by the Sun and the Moon, the orbit of the planets affect the Solar activity. Not only that, but the Sun has an orbit. It is not always at the exact center of the Solar System as almost everyone believes. It varies from .1 to 2.2 radii from the Solar Barycenter. You may have heard about the Doppler Wobble being used to identify solar systems that contain planets. Same thing. Also, this orbit of the Sun is not your typical elliptical orbit, it's more like something you would draw with a Spirograph. Anybody remember those?
In any 11 year sunspot cycle the frequency of sunspots, flares and coronal mass ejections peak in the middle years of the cycle. The end of the cycle is determined by the lack of sunspots. So, due to the erratic orbit (Doppler Wobble) of the Sun, there are even longer cycles of solar activity that contain series of 11 year cycles such as the Gleissberg Cycle. Due to reach its minimum in 2030. In these longer cycles the 11 year cycles in the middle of the cycle have more activity than the 11 year cycles at either end of these long cycles. The Gleissberg Cycle is just one and also one of the Milankovitch cycles.
This current solar cycle, #24, has been very quiet as #23 had been. Since we are on the downslope of the bell curve of the Gleissberg cycle, expect the upcoming cycle to be even less active and expect it to get cooler not warmer as we approach 2030. Some are predicting the upcoming Solar Minimum to be similar to the Maunder Minimum when we had the Little Ice Age. I hope not. A lot of people will starve. You see, civilizations have always prospered during times of global warming and died off during times of global cooling. CO2 is essential for life and we could actually use more to feed the world.

Stormtager. What you going to put in your cars gastank? Oil furnace? Oil filler in whatever you drive? All the "Trains & Planes & Automobiles" & Tractor trailers. You Green weenes are missing many of the brain cells that seperate reality from dreams. And you'r are wrecking this country!
      • Ash 8 mths ago
Yeah GJ, you're right: let's not stray from oil. Let's not be "Green weenes". We live in a country where the deficit between oil "produced" domestically and oil used has been increasing for some time. So let us not focus on alternative methods of powering vehicles and creating energy, it's not prudent, we'll just import more each year. Not only would we continue to be relying on a finite resource for yes, very important things like trains, planes, and automobiles, but we would do so at an ever-increasing risk of fluctuation in price as we'd be relying to a greater extent on exporters for this much-needed resource. It's not sustainable, nor is warmongering to secure this resource. Get your head out of your #$%$
      • G J 8 mths ago
Ash.. It's your head up yours. You weenielike skipped over your obstruction of oil exploration and expansion in this country and waters, that would kill your import export quandary. "Convenient oversight" I'm sure. You also skipped any practicle alternitive to put in your gashole. Perhaps some FOCUS? For you dreamers. The Big-Bad oil companys would overnight solve the alternative energy problems if faced with a REAL oil shortage. They are not obstructionests or dreamers they are DOERS!

well this can't be good....most people don't know about the danger of mixing fresh water with seawater in this part of the world.this is one of those scenarios were global warming can cause an ice age.if you don't know about this!! you better learn...
    • stormtiger  •  8 mths ago
The oil companies will say anything to keep people from switching from oil for the simple reason that if we do, their profits tank. It's just that simple.

F...no one is in denial of climate change. Climate change is constant. It was going on before humans were running factories and SUVs. It will continue LONG AFTER humans are gone. It is the hysteria and self-loathing of the "sky is falling" crowd that wants lots of new taxes, regulations and regression back to a 19th century agrarian life style that we are making fun of. If you want to panic and curl up in the fetal position with your thumb in your mouth, that is fine. Just leave the rest of us alone Einstein.

EAT YOUR HART OUT Mr. Gore. I Remember the time when you, starting in politics, promise THAT SATELLITE PROGRAMING RECEIVED FROM THE AIR WAVES WITH MY DISH, WILL BE FREE. Today almost FORTY YEARS LATER I AM PAYING almost One hundred and forty bucks for my DISH PROGRAMING. Anyway, this may be the ending of what started EEONS AGO. We all should be worried about this, because mother nature is sending us a message. The problem is, with the economy, the war against the criminal terrorists, the unemployment, gas prices, sunamis, storms, twisters and whatever, not to many are looking that way to the meltdown that is happening all over our planet. May GOD CAUGHT US CONFESSED!!.

Almost every response below makes fun of the event. Hope you're still laughing when the ocean comes to say hello. Conservatives remain in denial about global warning. America couldn't even see past it's own self interest to endorse the Kyoto Protocol. Keep fiddling while Rome burns....

seems global warming temperature crossed the limits.we have to improve our material and methods of living, simply by inclining to the eco-friendly materials
