Secret bidder nabs Jane Austen manuscript for $1.6 million

Portrait of Austen (Thinkstock)An unfinished, handwritten manuscript penned by Jane Austen has just sold for more than three times its expected price at a Sotheby's auction, fetching a whopping $1.6 million from an unknown buyer over the telephone.

Entitled The Watsons, it is the only handwritten Austen manuscript still in private hands. No original manuscripts exist of her six finished works, making The Watsons all the more unique and valuable to Austen fans.

Associate Professor of English at Manhattanville College Juliette Wells tells The Lookout that it's "fascinating" the manuscript sold for so much more money than Sotheby's predicted.

"Anyone can go on the web and look at the facsimiles that just sold for 1.6 million dollars," she adds. "So why would you pay unless you thought owning them would bring you closer to Jane Austen in some way?" (Check out the manuscript online here.)

Austen has a very devoted following, and this book is the "most precious Jane Austen relic that's come up to auction in our lifetime," Wells says. Dozens of fan fiction spin-offs, movie adaptations and even, of course, a zombie-infused take on Pride and Prejudice have sprouted up in Austen's honor, nearly two hundred years after the writer's death.

The marked-up draft affords a rare glimpse into Austen's writing process, Wells adds. The 68-page manuscript is made up of booklets that Austen created herself by folding her writing paper in half.

The Guardian writes that the famous author began the novel in 1804, when she had just had one manuscript rejected and another spiked by a publisher. Some speculate that she never finished The Watsons because its story hit too close to home: the novel's heroine is worried her ill clergyman father will die and leave the family penniless, which happened to Austen in real life only one year later.

Even though she wrote the book during a difficult time, it shows off Austen's trademark wit. The critic Margaret Drabble called it "a tantalizing, delightful and highly accomplished fragment, which must surely have proved the equal of her other six novels, had she finished it," according to Reuters.

It's unknown whether the Austen devotee who won the bidding war will make the manuscript publicly available or keep it private.

Secret bidder could be J.K. Rowling. Austen is her favorite author and she has the money.

I would LOVE to see a manuscript written in Jane Austen's hand. Something she actually touched and wrote on. How awesome!

The British Library has some of her handwritten manuscripts. While they rotate the items on display in their "Treasures" exhibit, you can see some items, including Austen's "History of England," online.

I would like to see what she has written only to see her train of thought, the words she uses, notations and things like that before an editor/publisher changes it. You get a feel for the writer when you see original handwritten notes.

I agree! This was published with two other novels several years ago and it wasn't the best. Perhaps because her editor didn't get his hands on it. Now I'm going to have to go home and re-read it and compare to her other works....

As a male taking a college course, Emma was a required reading. I struggled until I bought the crib notes explaining the novel. I was actually able to read, complete, and understand the essence of Jane Austen's work. It turned out to be a wonderful insight into the life, fears, and roles of life in that time. None the less for wear as a result! amen!

The author of this article knows absolutely nothing about Jane Austen. She says: "ome speculate that she never finished The Watsons because its story hit too close to home: the novel's heroine is worried her ill clergyman father will die and leave the family penniless, which happened to Austen in real life only one year later."

Apparently the author of this article doesn't realize that this same theme appears in Pride and Prejudice (Mrs. Bennet is desperate to get the girls married in part because their father's estate is entailed away from them, and when he dies, they're in serious trouble if they don't have husbands), and in Sense and Sensibility (the father does die, his son gets the estate, and his daughters and widow are forced to move to a tiny cottage).

Lots of authors don't finish books -- actually, most authors have at least one or two unfinished/abandoned stories kicking around. They decide it isn't going anywhere, or they'd rather work on a different story. That's probably what happened with Austen too.

      I love Jane Austen!
      Such a brilliant, classy soul.

Austen is great. She has a very unique style, and her brillaince is often difficult to recognize. But it is there. She can make seemingly ordinary things appear lively and amusing (especially with her trademark wit). Such a shame that this was never published.

To the geniuses posting that the RICH don't pay enough taxes in THIS country; how do you know where the winning bidder lives? The manuscript was auctioned off in LONDON..that's not in the US, you bright sparks!!!
    • daisy  •  10 mths ago
I love her , and I have read all her novels. I just wish that some how this buyer will share her manuscript to the world.

What a treat to own a HANDWRITTEN manuscript by THE JANE AUSTEN!
    • BJH  •  10 mths ago
According to many of you posters, the rich should be thrown in prison for spending their money. When they spend it it goes back into the economy. Not when it sits in the bank. If I were rich I wouldn't have any problem spending mine. And neither would you. Many of you may not be aware that is no crime to be rich. You just envy the fact that they are and you aren't. I have spent as much as $200.00 for an antique book. If I were rich I would have no problem paying a million for one.

Gary W...um, so you didn't go to high school? I mean every high school that I know of requires you to take a literature class. Not very many lterature classes out there aren't going to bring up Jane Austen. She is one of the most celebrated and publicly known authors ever. Seriously, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility? You've never heard of those moveis/books? You need to get out more.
