Mexican drug cartel promises truce in letter

Less than a month after authorities killed La Familia's leader in a gun battle, the Mexican drug gang has offered a one-month truce to prove that its members are not responsible for the violence plaguing the state of Michoacan. The gang reportedly emailed the truce letter (original Spanish-language version here; Google Translate's rendition into English here) Sunday. It accuses Mexican federal police of blaming the gang for their own crimes.

La Familia first gained attention in 2006 by rolling severed heads into a nightclub and announcing its intention to protect Michoacan from other gangs.
