Mexican police chief held in El Paso detention center

Marisol Valles, the 21-year-old former police chief of a violent town in Mexico, is being held in a Texas detention center, the El Paso Times reports.

Chihuahua state human rights official Gustavo de la Rosa Hickerson says Valles, her husband, young son and parents were taken to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in El Paso last week when they requested asylum at the border. According to Hickerson, they're still there. Valles, called the "bravest woman in Mexico" for volunteering to police the drug-violence ravaged town of Praxedis G. Guerrero, was fired from the police chief job when she didn't show up on Monday.
