Photos: Occupy Wall Street protests enter third week

Click image for more photos from the Occupy Wall Street protestsClick image for more photos from the Occupy Wall Street protestsThe Occupy Wall Street protests in lower Manhattan's Financial District are now set to head into their third week. Labor and community groups, including United Federation of Teachers, several SEIU locals, Workers United, and Transport Workers Union Local 100, have announced they will join the protesters for a march next Wednesday, Crain's reports. Celebrities, including Russell Simmons and Michael Moore have stopped by the rally site in solidarity.

On Friday the organizers released a statement about their aims, which read in part: "We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power. Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone." The movement has been criticized for lacking a clear set of demands or goals.

Photographer Bianca Garcia attended the "Occupy Wall Street" protests on Saturday Sept. 24, and posted a slideshow of her photographs on Flickr. That day the protesters marched north to Union Square and clashed with police. Garcia emailed The Lookout:

We marched from Liberty Square [the protester's name for Zuccotti Park] in the Financial District up through Washington Square Park to Union Square. After gathering at Union Square there were, I would estimate, around a thousand people. We were deciding whether we wanted to march to the UN or back to Liberty Square and we decided on the latter. Up until this point the march had been peaceful. Besides the police trying to push us out of the streets and onto the sidewalks everything was fine, I even saw police talking to protesters. Then all of a sudden it devolved into chaos at University Place and 12th Street.  A ton of new cops/vans showed up and brought out these orange nets and were barricading everyone in. I don't know how the situation changed so drastically so quickly, but everywhere I looked another person was being shoved onto the ground and arrested. I photographed about 5 arrests I think and then I started to feel like they were going to target me because I had a camera so I got out while I still could.

Capitalism and greed are not the same things. I have no objection to anyone making a fair profit on a good or service that they sell me. What I do object to is the scheming to rape a situation for all it’s worth (read housing bubble) and then run to the government for a bail out when it all falls faster than they expected. There are many on Wall Street that should be held for “crimes against humanity” for when you destroy an economy, you destroy the lives of all marginal people and the middle class. A country cannot last too long in today’s world without a strong middle class—We’re in trouble.

Is that sort of like what happens when Obama takes 535 million dollars and gives it to a company named Solyndra, which then goes bankrupt within 2 years and all the money is gone? Oh, and then the company officers refuse to answer any questions.
      • anonymous 7 mths ago
I agree with everything you say except that capitalism and greed are not the same things.
      • GoldCountryGal 7 mths ago
The housing bubble was created by greed on all levels, but especially on the consumer level. Let's not begin to kid ourselves that the greed only laid with banks. Blame idiot homeowners that continued to leverage their equity. Blame idiots in the government that convinced everyone that they should be homeowners with 3% (or less down) in the FHA.

A strong middle class? I think you're just another yutz that doesn't really understand what middle class is in today's world. If you or your family make less than 70K you aren't middle class.

Nothing is going to change until will end the money laundering scheme in Washingon called lobbying and special interest. The exporting of our jobs and the acts of treason in DC are all tied to this money train and it is sold to the American public as the new world order (globalism). In reality it is a corporate funded scheme to squeeze every penny out of the revenue stream and fatten the pockets of the greedy CEOs. It is time to place tariffs and taxes on those that are raping our country.....it is the only answer and the only one these #$%$ are going to understand. Close our markets and let them sell to the Asians where they are manufacturing 90% of the products sold to us. The Asians have stiff import duties and local taxes to protect their markets from foreign competition and we need to do the same........fair play!

Why are jobs leaving US shores? Liberals and their 90 year progressive agenda has made it impossible to be a capitalist and innovator. The tidal wave of regulation, lawsuits, unionism and taxes chased American employers off shore. Minimum wage laws destroyed the market place of labor by forcing employers to pay to high of a wage for labor that is in too much in supply.
The Liberal left destroyed one of the best education systems in the world by infesting it with it's loony ideas and propaganda. Employers are demanding workers with high competency in science and math and our education system delivers artist and idiots. A second grader can tell you how evil corporations pollute the world but they can't read, write or do arithmetic. Educators are more concerned with teaching "my two mommies" than mathematics and science.
In Asia student go to school all year long and the school day is longer and after school they attend extra schooling.
We need to go back to a real free market economy. End crony Capitalism which is the hallmark of over-regulation and over-taxation.

@ Unknown ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! I have been saying this for YEARS, we can go back and forth all day abt what is going to get things working better in our government but NONE of it will happen until there is COMPLETE LOBBYIST REFORM! it is ridiculous how much conflict-of-interest there exists in congress with all these politicians being paid by the groups. Start from there and THEN we can rly start to address the problems we have been dealing with for years. There are no real good guys on EITHER side, right or left.

johnathan, you are dead wrong the middle class is vanishing due to free trade, that is free for those who send there crap over here, and restrick trade going into there countries, like China, and japan, who protect there economy, and workers from outside trade that would harm them. We tax imports from Chinaat 2.5% they tax our exports at 25%, and I read last week were they have put a terrif on chiken in China at 50 to 100% we can not compete in these markets as long as we let them walk all over us, and what about national defence, we can't defend Tiwan as China would cut us off everything our millateay needs to defend ourselves. this is not a liberial or conserative problem, but an American problem, don't late the politacians divide and conquer us by turning us aginst each other.

The fact that lobbying is even legal is proof that politicians are corrupt. There is no legitamate reason for it. You don't need a billion dollars raised to "get your message out". Every politician Republican or Democrat has the same campaign speech, yet nothing ever changes. As great as they all claim to be, they all have the same weakness we all do......greed.

scripture does say-"the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil"
      • lazy t 7 mths ago
To stop lobbying would reqwuire that the right to free speech be changed in the constitution , and for good reasons, thats not easy , right or wrong lobbying is a form of free speech and lobbyists represent a wide variety of American groups , its the foriegn lobbyist i can understand why they are aloud to operate freely here , it does not seem right for Americans to have to compete against foreigners for the attention of our elected leaders
      • unknown soldier 7 mths ago
The right to free speech has nothing to do with the passing of a greenback. Where in the constitution does it associate free speech and the dollar bill. In our criminal court system the offering of money is considered bribery and extortion is essentially the same physics in reverse.....give me the money or else. It is a pay-off and someone is looking for a return on the pay-off. The average American is getting screwed through this money laundering scheme and it needs to end now.

No, why is everyone saying stuff like "protesters are whiners", etc.. they're NOT, if you dont protest or hold the government responsible for their actions, you WILL get a bad government, and our government is/has been corrupt, we're starting to have a tyrannical, oligarchic government. All they care about is imperialism and global control. Look at what the Patriot Act is doing for instance, its making it legal to take/infringe upon our Constitutional Rights(which they CANNOT do), all in the name of protection agianst so-called "Terrorists". Well guess what, the government(s) ARE the biggest "Terrorist" of them all.
Its the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority" - Benjamin Franklin
"When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny." - Thomas Jefferson
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothole is for people of good conscience to remain silent" - Thomas Jefferson
"The stregnth and power of despotism consists wholly in the fear of resistance" - Thomas Paine
"Its the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government" - Thomas Paine
"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is a force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master, Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action" - George Washington
"A nation of well informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which god has given them cannot be enslaved, it is in the region of Ignorance that tyranny begins" - Benjamin Franklin

If our founding fathers were still alive, they would not only be mad at the politicians for what they have become, but also at us, the PEOPLE because of the quotes I stated above, Its OUR responsibillity to keep our government in check.

This bears repeating: "The Federal Reserve (Banks) are one of the most corrupt institutions
the world has ever seen. There is not a man within the sound of my voice
who does not know that this Nation is run by the International Bankers."
      -- Louis McFadden
(1876-1936) US Congressman (R-PA) (1915-1935), Chairman of House Banking and Currency Committee. Poisoned in 1936.

Let's hope Herman Cane isn't pushed into office. He used to work for the Federal Reserve, and has defended it in terms of not auditing them on various talk shows on the radio. Ron Paul is the only one of the candidates who wants to audit / end the federal reserve.

It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.

Who do you think owns America, the presidency, the politicians? The Banks. Who owns the credit unions, the people. Break the Banks Join the credit unions. But guess what? When the big banks see what the credit unions aredoing, They'll ask congress to sock it to them, and the congress will. Watch "The inside job" and you will see how us and the rest of the worlds people got screwed by corrupt bankers and politicians. Think your #$%$ now? Just wait till you see that documentary.

Keep us divided, ignorant and afraid. Distract us with endless entertainment at our finger tips . . . And they take all that we have!
    • aref  •  7 mths ago
When you live in a country that hasn't prosecuted one person responsible for the cause of the 2008 meltdown, the biggest beat down on the American economy ever, many losing at least 40% of their savings and pensions one would have to think big money owns this country. You'd do more time if you stole food from the store to eat.
    • lawrencez  •  7 mths ago
we need to eliminate nafta, cafta, free trade agreements....we need manufacturing jobs in the US.....if we don't what are we going to do with the people of big cities that are undereducated and unskilled.....they will be on welfare for this and the next generations.
    • unknown soldier  •  7 mths ago
The problem is that we are dealing with criminals that have taken over our govenment by using legal means......they have changed the moral and ethical standards of our democracy and are using them as tools against the people of our country. They no longer represent the common man and are driven by lobby dollars and special interest money. It is my humble opinion that when you are dealing with hardened criminals there is only one thing that they understand and that is force. March on DC and get them out of our government.

do you know what will get corporate America to listen? there is a movement still small but growing, a movement in which people check labels and buy American. in the case where you cant get the item or a similar one that is American made, buy the one one with the most American parts. this will get them to listen. END OUTSOURCING NOW!

Thank you Yahoo for reporting on The Occupy Wall Street movement. The people in NY and the others around the country, like, Chicago, San Francisco, Tampa and D.C and many many more cities are dedicated and passionate and educated. Main street has been repeatedly slammed. The average U.S. citizen is suffering whether it be from unemployment, foreclosure, under employment or rising food costs. If not now, when. If not us, then who. We are the 99%
