Report: Some illegal immigrants prepare to flee Alabama ahead of new law

Protesters march against the immigration law in June (AP/Jay Reeves)Illegal immigrants in Alabama are selling off household items such as microwaves and sofas in preparation to leave the state if a tough new law goes into effect Sept. 1.

The Birmingham News' David White collects anecdotal evidence that some of the estimated 120,000 unauthorized immigrants in the state are considering leaving or have already left because they worry they would be arrested and deported under the new law.

An operations manager for a Spanish-language radio provider told White that people are calling in to try to sell trucks, sofas, microwaves and other household items to listeners. "They say they're leaving. They kind of tell you that at the end, so people feel bad for them and buy the item," Orlando Rosa of Rivera Communications said.

A Spanish-language translator who works with immigrants told White that some are waiting to see if the law will be blocked before the school year begins, because they don't want to school officials to request proof of their children's citizenship under the new law. One illegal immigrant with two children who are American citizens told White he has sold his truck so he can go back to Mexico with some extra money if the law goes into effect.

Like Arizona's controversial SB1070 law, the Alabama legislation requires police officers to ask for immigration papers during routine stops if they suspect a person may be in the country illegally. The Alabama law also criminalizes transporting or "harboring" illegal immigrants and makes it a state crime for an illegal immigrant to seek or perform work. (Under federal law, overstaying a visa is a civil offense, and entering the country without papers is a misdemeanor crime.) The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to block the law.

After Arizona's law passed last year, one research team estimated that 100,000 Latinos left the state, though the researchers were unable to determine what percentage of them were immigrants, legal or illegal. The Mexican government said 23,380 of its citizens moved back from Arizona over the same period. A federal judge blocked the Arizona law before it could go into effect, ruling that it interfered with the federal government's control over immigration law.

See Ya. I wish all states would do this. It's about time we start to take back our Country. Go home and if the Citizens of this country needs you we will put you on a list to enter legally. No amnesty and no more freebies for illegals.

Children of ILLEGAL immigrants are not US citizens. If the parents were here ILLEGALLY, then the children were born during the commissoin of a felony (after all the Feds want to be the only ones to enforce immigration laws so it must be a federal/felony).

        I agree!!!

Oh, libs my yard guy is a white working male from my state, not a mexican so there are many hard working men/women that have been screwed by this invasion, i have had others come to take the work and kicked their #$%$ off my property. i will gladly pay this hard working American to take care of my yard over a slightly cheaper illegal.

Imagine that, illegal are afraid of being caught. Alabama will be saving a tons in social programs.
      • Greg 10 mths ago
No, No they won't. Illegal Immigrants don't recieve any type of aid because they aren't legal. Alabama will probably spend about the same.
      • GM281 10 mths ago
@Greg most of us believe that the citizen children who do receive food stamps, housing assistance, Medicaid, are the same thing as the immigrant receiving the benefit as it is of benefit to the whole family. And even illegal immigrants receive WIC and emergency Medicaid.
      • dead dog 10 mths ago
Sorry, but they do receive aid through their children.

Something I have allways wondered, when you apply for a job, you have to fill out an I9 form with two forms of identification. It states right on the form that failure to comply or giving false information is a $10,000 fine and a Fedral offense. Why is this not enforced?
      • Deb 10 mths ago
Same reason the immigration laws aren't enforced. Washington doesn't care about the law...they care about votes.
      • LearnedHand 10 mths ago
Because the Republican business owners that employ these illegals don't care about the law - they donate the GOP, who look out for them. Also, the illegals spend about $2000 to get falsified papers - they use Soc Security Numbers from newborn babies and from stolen identities on the paperwork. The coyotes who bring them over here sell them the papers, or tell them who to buy them from once they get here.

I was born here. I served 3 years in the Army and had a top secret security clearance. I have had a driver's license for about 48 years. I've just been told by Big Brother that when I renew next year, I need to provide 3 forms of ID in order to do so, including a certified copy of my birth certificate, yet I am also told that in many states, illegals can get driver's licenses. What's wrong here?
      • Kevin 10 mths ago
If your legal there should not be a problem. Don't really care about your past.
      • Liz 10 mths ago
His point is smart guy, that we legal residents have to present documentation out the wazoo just to get a license to drive, where as illegals don't need squat. They don't even need to speak, read or write english to pass the test. It's wrong, and that is "No-bamas" point

Way to go Alabama! Unemployment of citizens is about to drop. Less crowding in schools will allow more teacher attention. Your hospitals will not have to lay off citizens to balance their budgets, harmed by free service to illegals. Your state budget should look better.

If you have rats, mice, spiders, ants etc. that move into your house do you think, they are probable desperate to feed their families, and make a better life for themselves? Then why do we tolerate that from the two legged rats that move into our nations house without even asking?
      • Bonnie 10 mths ago
If these Mexicans and other invaders would stop having babies they can't afford to feed, maybe their lives would not be so bad in their own countries?
Now they are here over-populating the U.S. SICKENING PEOPLE.
    • MrNegative  •  10 mths ago
During the great depression they stopped all immigration. It's about jobs.
    • unknown  •  10 mths ago
Lets see, you come here illegaly, have kids, live on welfare, get food stamps, and if convicted of a crime you get let go since your illegal and cant be prosecuted.
      .
Not saying anything about mexicans, saying it about all who are here illegal PLEASE LEAVE. You are breaking the law, (and our "American Civil Liberties Union" is defending non-Americans against American laws.) your are taking jobs from Americans, and you are not paying taxes.
Deport any and all illegals, fine and imprison the companies and personel that hire and pay these illegals. I have to prove I am legally allowed to work in the US why dont they?
      .
I say move to a foreign country, renounce citizenship, come back in 2 years as an illegal and get all the benifits our government wont give you as an American.
    • CB  •  10 mths ago
They'll prob all come to Tx. As if we don't have enough people here that can't speak english.

What the "reporter" on this story failed to mention is that southern states are suffering huge financial setbacks since illegals poured in after Hurricane Katrina. Stories the mainstream media refuses to report have shown up in southern media outlets about hospitals all but bankrupted by illegals having multiple babies in less than 2 years, having to hire expensive translators in hospitals and schools, the crime from petty theft to Mexican drug cartels. These states were already poor, then Katrina caused an even greater economic setback. But the illegals, unlike the hurricane, not only came in to wreak havoc but CONTINUE to decimate their economy. It's disgusting that we keep hearing how "they just want a better life" - what, and poor Americans DON'T??? Or we just don't deserve a better life? You cannot have millions of poor, unskilled, uneducated, non-English people just show up in a short period of time and not have financial disaster. It is completely unfair to all the poor people already trying to make a living on very little. The reason these creeps were able to settle in so easily is on the backs of big business and corrupt politicians . They want ultra cheap labor they pay no benefits/pensions to & no taxes on. Plus the bonus of knowing hispanics have many more children than any other ethnic group; those children are US citizens instantly. And in 18 short years, they vote in politicians who cater to illegals. It's happened in California to the point that 50% of elected officials are Mexican-American and almost every law they pass is something for illegal hispanics. Forget about going to war with another country, Mexico simply pushed it's most unproductive, costly citizens onto our soil & told them to do what comes naturally - Give birth despite having no way to support your children. This is NOT a culture we should embrace.

if the feds were doin there job the states wouldnt have to.....

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to block the law.

So the American Civil Liberties Union is actually against legal American's Civil Liberties to live in a country where our laws are enforced. All of us Legal Americans should sue the ACLU for promoting illegal activity.

Blue collar workers in the construction trades have taken a beat down, all so greedy lawbreaker contractors can exploit extra profits. Hard working Americans have been sidelined and sent to the unemployment line, so illegals can lowball wages and take jobs they have no right to take. Millions of American families are suffering from these economic terrorists, and it's time for all of them to get out, taking their welfare fed and breed anchor babies with them.
    • Richard  •  10 mths ago
I don't like illegals any more than any of the right wingers, but they always go after the wrong people. How about stiff fines and even jail time for the people who hire them? They are the enablers. If they are drug related, jail them.
