Researchers find ‘dark side of happiness’

A new paper published in Perspectives on Psychological Science finds that people who are unusually happy all the time can end up with broken relationships and destroyed careers, just like the rest of us dysfunctional grumpy folk.

Researchers told the Boston Globe that extremely happy people are only aware of their own bliss and are completely unaware of how their loved ones may be feeling. They also tend to engage in risky behavior.

And the pursuit of happiness can actually make people sadder. Teaching people to value their own happiness as a goal leads them to report lower satisfaction and feelings of social isolation, researchers found.
