Study reveals 10 highest- and lowest-paying college majors

Despite the price of a college degree skyrocketing over the past 30 years, recent surveys show that Americans are skeptical of the value of a four-year education. Some public intellectuals and entrepreneurs, meanwhile, share the view that  higher education has become an overpriced bubble, ready to pop.

What's been lost in this renewed public scrutiny over the worth of a four-year degree are the radical gaps in future income among college graduates themselves, gaps that track closely to the respective majors. In other words, before we can ask, "Is college worth it?" we have to ask, "What do you plan to study?"

A new study out of Georgetown University led by Anthony Carnevale crunches U.S. Census numbers to highlight the stark differences in lifetime income among college graduates who chose different majors. The study found that a petroleum engineering major will make 300 percent more over his or her lifetime than a peer who majored in counseling psychology.

Here's the study's graph of the top 10 highest-paying majors, which is dominated by the field of engineering:

    highest earnings majors

Here's the researchers' findings on the majors that lead to the lowest earnings:

    lowest earnings majors

Despite these gaps, the researchers point out that the average American college student will earn 85 percent more over his or her lifetime than the average high school graduate, which suggests a college degree is well worth the time and money. But as Americans take on more and more debt to graduate college ($24,000 on average), the return on that debt depends in large part on what courses that student took.

Carnevale pointed out on a conference call with reporters that "college majors in America are highly segregated by sex, by race [and] by ethnicity." But even within a specific major, white men out-earn minorities and women. In the graph below, you can see the difference in average income between men and women who graduated with the same degree:

It's all about supply and demand. Since there is more demand and less engineers available they have higher paying jobs.

To all those liberal arts majors: just because someone goes into engineering, doesn't mean they're only doing it for money and have job satisfaction. Really, I think creating an electric car, and building a bridge that doesn't fall down are pretty satisfying career goals. You all seem to be equating easiness of the major courses taken in college to life-long happiness, which is not true considering how much easier it is to have a comfortable life with a job that requires more rigerous work. Not to mention, that there is not anything inherently wrong with being conserned about a future paycheck because after all, money is what makes the world go around, and in the end, if you don't have a skill-set that is high in demand, you won't be getting much of it.

Preach, sister. I'm in college now and I can let you know that you can't just BE an engineer because you FEEL like it. Calculus and Physics will make you think 3 times over before you choose something just because of financial success. You have to be passionate about it.

they 4get 2 consider other factors. health/med prep may b low, most ppl who major in that go on2 med school nd beyond, so this properly reflect their earnings

So... that's some amazing* research (*sarcastic). 8 out of the first 10 are engineering. It would have been far more interesting to look at industries as opposed to individual jobs. Not to mention, nothing about this article addresses the fact that most of the jobs in the "lowest pay" are things people do for love, not money. Where's the correlating micro-sized graph comparing salary and satisfaction? Nice work, Ms Goodwin. You managed to graph the obvious without telling us anything we didn't already know, adding to the information, or making it interesting or relevant. I applaud you for remaining employed. What's YOUR salary?

it's not necessarily about how much money you make, but whether you actually enjoy what you are doing with yourself. My biggest issue with post secondary education is the associated costs - not just the tuition, but the books, supplies, living expenses which all add up quickly. I will be paying for my education for 15 years - I am a registered nurse, so it's not like I'm making pennies. This is absurd.

I'm finishing my Commerce degree with a major in accounting and honestly... money shouldn't determine what you decide to study at school. As long as you're doing what you enjoy and it drives you to learn more then money shouldn't be a factor.

Regardless of who gets paid what, questioning the value of education is silly. Education not only provides much higher wages, as the article states, but relative job security. If you have a meaningful education in something (by meaningful I mean specific skills no one else has, sorry arts degree), you should never be out of work for any length of time other than by choice. And if you have a degree in anything you shoot straight to the top of any job application heap. So should times get tough for you and your last resort is Walmart, they'll hire you before hiring anyone with just their high school diploma. As far as I'm concerned, with all the uncertainty right now, education is more important than ever.

i make more than than atleast half the kids i know who went to collage, i love what i do and working for my self is a plus but i only made it to the 12 grade and dropped out but idk things happen for a reason
    • Cindy  •  Chatham-Kent, Canada  •  5 mths ago
This is just an article proving the fact that engineers will make the most...whereas the arts fields would be the least. Nothing new. Of course, it isnt all about money at the end of the day. Its only telling us the obvious with stats to back it up. Really we are all very glad that there's even a study on this SERIOUSLY.

I'm gettin a Bachelors of Science in Engineering. I respect other degrees: getting a degree is proving you can learn x amount of info in x amount of time. Be versatile and you'll be an asset to any company.

I picked my social psychology major knowing full well that I won't make a whole lot. But it's a subject that truly fascinates me and it's the only field I can imagine myself going into and being truly happy. So as long as I can earn enough to live comfortably, and I can be happy with what I'm doing, then I won't complain about college being "worthless." Because it's worth so much more than a future paycheck.
And besides, there's an increasing demand for mental health and public sector workers. That's something we all have to take into account when deciding our majors, because you can't really make your expected wage if you can't find a job in your field.
      • just peachy 6 mths ago
You hit the nail on the head. I'm passionate about psychology and people. I don't need a lavish life style to make me happy. I just need purpose.

Honestly I don't care how much money I make. To be motivated by money is ridiculous and will just make me unhappy. Also, your graphs are really small that I can't read them unless I'm a centimeter away.

it all matters who you are and who you know, your degree will get you only so far. Your work experience is what counts most when applying for a job.
