Thirty-seven states cut education funding this year

Philadelphia students protest education cuts (AP)A majority of state governments have cut funding to K-12 schools this year as they struggle to balance their budgets without the $100 billion infusion from the federal stimulus that has now dried up.

Illinois, Kansas, Texas and Wisconsin have cut overall funding by more than 10 percent since the last fiscal year, according to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Thirty states are now funding their schools with lower budgets than they had in 2008 (measured in inflation-adjusted dollars), even though school populations have grown. Arizona, California, Hawaii and South Carolina are leading the way, having cut per-student funds by more than 20 percent since 2008.

About half of all K-12 education funding comes from states, so teachers and schools are already feeling the impact of these cuts. The number of local education jobs decreased by 115,000 between September 2010 and September 2011, according to the report. Since September 2008, schools have eliminated 278,000 jobs.

President Obama claims his proposed $447 billion jobs act would save 400,000 educator jobs over the next year, but Republican lawmakers oppose its passage.

A year at elite Princeton University costs a student $37,000. But a year in a New Jersey state prison costs $43,000 per prisoner. The US has more people incarcerated than any country on the world, but places only sixth in college degrees.

Funny that Cali just passed a bill to give financial aid to illegal aliens for education for Collegue but Cali cannot even take care of their own schools...talk about reverse discrimination! No help for illegals send them all back to their countries and come here LEGALLY!
      • edward 7 mths ago
That"s pretty wild once you think about it. Isn't it?
      • Charles 7 mths ago

Instead of cutting education, why don't you cut school sports funding, Talk about a waste of money ! Does anyone have a clue of how much it costs U.S. taxpayers every quarter to support school sports ?! Just think about how much it costs just to maintain the team buses to haul the kids around just to go play with a freakin' ball !

How about cutting all of this foreign aid we send over to these flea bitten countries that hate us, so our kids can have a good education including college. Our parents can live peaceful in their golden days, and our hungry can have food to eat. Congress and Government(s) (Federal, State and Local) wake the hell up!
      • Angry Dragon 7 mths ago
Because it would ruin our system of capitalism, big corporations (like Monsanto) need poor countries in Africa to buy their product, how they going to buy it unless its from aid, or the World Bank?
      • Elaine 7 mths ago
I agree with you but do wonder if we can be an isolationist nation, after all. Wish we could, and just ignore everybody else. Just not possible.
    • Johnny  •  7 mths ago
How about the politicians take a pay cut.!!!!!!
      • Ronald 7 mths ago
How about paying them MORE if they promise to stop legislating?
      • Michael 7 mths ago
they make such a tiny amount in the overall scheme of things it wouldnt save even one school district from cutting jobs.
      • Bo 7 mths ago
@Michael. It's not about the amount they make. It's their abilities to do their job, which in the current state, incompetent. They make outrageous salaries and look at the mess we're in. Don't you think their more like CEO's in the corporate world? Cutting workforce, benefits and everything else to save their #$%$
    • GboysMom  •  7 mths ago
I have about had enough of all these cuts from our Gov't officials...All those politicians need to take a pay and entitlement cut themselves! See how they like it!! We as parents are being asked to spend more and more money on our kids schools and materials. We have 4 kids and that tends to be pretty expensive each year. These schools are more interested in teaching the State tests rather than make sure our children are getting the help they need and the understanding of what they need to learn in school. Our kids are our future! We are their Parents and need to take a stand! Time to stand up and say "Enough is Enough"!!
      • MsAbby 7 mths ago
So did I, as a taxpayer, demand that you have 4 kids? Did you stand buy while the unions took over your children's school? Did you stand by when the federal government started interfering in education about LBJ's time? Do any of you ever go tot he schools and volunteer? Why do the taxpayers have to pick up the entire tab for your children?
      • Solidarity USA 7 mths ago
The day the thieves in D.C.start returning their self approved raises, health benefits, lifetime salaries, will be the day the people demand it with force. They are stealing our childrens' future. We need to target their 'childrens' futures to open their eyes!
      • GboysMom 7 mths ago
@MsAbby....First of all, my husband and I both are taxpayers as well! Yes, I have gone to the schools to volunteer...In fact, I have even home schooled our 2 youngest for the last 3 years until we moved this year. I stand up for my Children and their Education!! So who the hell are you to point your finger at me or others who have Children? And by the way, other taxpayers do not pick up the tab for our children! Pull the stick out your #$%$ MsAbby and grow up!
    • Barry  •  7 mths ago
And why wouldn't they? After all being smart is far to expensive. Lately I think being smart is also considered un-American. We are the legion of dumb.
    • mean old man  •  7 mths ago
Just what the global economy needs, less educated workers. Those jobs we lost to China. They will come back all rights at 5 to 10 per hour. We will become the cheap manufacturing country. Great.
    • Java Man  •  7 mths ago
We some how have money for wars, money to give out to all the illegals inhabiting California, but no money for education.

No wonder why other countries call us "those american idiots."
Sometimes, I dislike this country of ours.
    • Timothy M  •  7 mths ago
      heres the problem.

outside of firefighters, police, and soldiers, teachers are the most vital public servant in america as they are charged with educating the next generations of this countries leaders.

yet more often than not they are treated like dirt. do they need to be held to a higher standard? absolutely. we need to be bringing the best into teach our children. but they also need to stay at that level.. Tenure should be eliminated so that only the best teachers are allowed to stay at thier jobs. and test results should not be the only measure of that
If you want to use the Asian model to measure achievement (through testing) yet not give the teachers the resources and threaten thier jobs if the students do not perform, teacher-assisted cheating to boost school test scores is a given (and im surprised it doesnt happen more).

California makes cuts to education ,while our BELOVED governor ,Jerry Brown just authorized thousands of illegal criminals to receive grants and free education at the expense of us taxpayers in Mexifornia! Wonderful Jerry. Before you pass another stupid law, put it on the ballot and see how far you get.

Thomas Jefferson was concise in his early warning to the American nation, "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

Soon will come the day that Politicians are hunted and scorned like the common Teacher and American worker. They should be rounded up and made to dig ditches.

i can remember walking to school. i can remember when i went further than grade school paying for bus tickets to ride to school. i can remember having a choice of to carry a lunch or purchase a lunch. i can remember teachers that cared if you learned. i can remember books that were required to have book covers because you would need to use them the following year. i can remember because i was taught to. i also remember that parents were not the fault of a child not learning because the teacher was expected to do this.
i remember when a college degree meant something and was not just a paper mill. but those times are lost.

They are winning. They've stretched our military thin, they've stretched our teachers thin. We're losing the war on both fronts. America MUST bounce back to the TOP. We are being surpassed by countries who would never help us. We help the whole world. We fight everyone's wars. We educate the World's Children. Yet when it comes to our own. We've let the politicians and greedy corporations keep the middle class down.
    • Biggymum  •  7 mths ago
We have money for wars & illegals though !

      How to fix education 101.
-Reduce the safety net. If people can afford cell phones and plasma TVs on welfare there is no incentive to get an education and find a good job.
-Mandatory attendance at a locked reformatory, truant students are the leading cause of poor academics.
-Fix the curriculum, huge mess, not enough time to go into it.
-Track the students based on ability. Sorry, not every student is going to be a professor, nor does every student have it in them to be a professor. We need fruit pickers too, stop wasting money on kids that do not want to learn.
-Raise teachers salaries to get the best possible people to be teachers.
