U.S. sues to block AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile

The U.S. government is suing to block AT&T's proposed $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA, on the grounds that it would "substantially lessen competition" in the wireless market, the Justice Department announced minutes ago.

"AT&T's elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market," the government said in a court filing.

    More on this to come...

guess what people. It's true! your govt is getting into the wireless broadband market. It has exclusive rights already to tap and spy. Now they can control buisiness in a supposedly free market place. I don't see the problem of AT&T purchaing T-Mobile. They need something because their service suchs in my neck of the woods. It just amazes me that our govt isn't on top of a budget or creating jobs. But let a big buisiness deal go down with out an Obama "SHAKEDOWN" Now that would just about be like sin....

Of course they do. George Bush made sure of this.
And not getting involved would create a monoply for ATT. It should be stopped.

This has happened to at@t before, and at that time it would have been a monopoly, but not in this case, their's plenty of other carriers that are better than at@t in the mobile dept.so the gov't should keep out of it, this company ..they dont seem to care when other companies buy out other's .like bank of america, at the time allready one of the largest banks in the world bought merrel lynch, one of the biggest trading firms???

I don't want to be part of AT&T. Maybe this time the gov should win.

I’m not a fan of the Justice Department, but I agree with their assessment that taking a major competitor out of this market would raise costs and lower service.

At one time the profit margin on text services was well over 1500 percent. Only competition brought the rate down.

It is about time the monoply laws were dusted off and enforced, these hugh all comsuming muli-national corportations are destroying this country and countries around the world----break them up before they totally destroy all of us and I am tired of paying for their screw-ups

If T-Mobile does not get bought up it will just die out. It is too small to compete. I had T-Mobile a few years back and the service was OK but it had too many dead zones. Also T-mobile is not a low cost carrier as the article states. If you want low cost use Virgin Mobile, which runs on the Sprint network, and you do not have to sign any contracts.

T-Mobile may die but it won’t be because of the network. T-Mobiles 4G rocks with lots room for speed improvements.

In the agreement with AT&T, T-Mobile would be able to secure additional resources if the purchase does not go through.

Excuse me DOJ, why are you going to waste millions of my tax dollars blocking an American Company that has promised to bring nearly 100,000 new jobs to the US from doing so? Can anyone answer that please.

The govt does not want it's monopoly challenged. It believes it can plan economies just like the soviets did. How dare AT&T think they could actually compete without permission!
