    long-term unemployed 06:17:11

It's no secret that this country is enduring an unemployment crisis.

But what's especially troubling about today's jobless scene is that the United States is actually in the midst of a *long-term* unemployment crisis. Of the nearly 14 million Americans who are officially jobless, more than 6 million have been out of work for more than six months, the official definition of long-term unemployment.

The average spell of joblessness now lasts more than nine months--an all-time high since records began in 1948. And, amid fears of a double-dip recession, things aren't likely to get much better any time soon.
Having so many people out of work for so long is disastrous--both for those who find themselves without a stable income, and for society at large. When people go for months or years without a job, their skills tend to atrophy, and they lose valuable connections to the working world.

They can also become discouraged: One study found that the amount of time people spend looking for a job decreases sharply the longer they're unemployed. And, perhaps not surprisingly, they start sleeping later in the mornings. Meanwhile, the recent spate of Help Wanted ads bearing warnings like "Unemployed need not apply" suggests many companies are reluctant to hire the jobless, especially those who haven't worked in a while. Small wonder, then, that many of the older workers now in the ranks of the long-term unemployed aren't returning to the workforce at all.

It all makes for a bleak paradox: The longer you've been out of work, the harder it is to find it.

But statistics and studies only go so far in helping us to understand the struggles of the long-term unemployed. That's why we want to hear from you.

If you were out of work for six months or more at any time since the Great Recession began in December 2007, tell us your story. We want to know things like:

    • How did you lose your job in the first place?
    • What was the hardest thing about being out of work so long?
    • Were potential employers wary of hiring you when they found out you hadn't had a job in while?
    • How helpful were jobless benefits in keeping you and your family afloat? Did you exhaust them?
    • Are you seeing more competition for openings than you did when the economy was booming?
    • Did you find work in the end? If not, are you still looking? Or have you given up?
    • If you ultimately landed a job, how did you do it? Any useful tips?
    • How should we go about making it easier for the long-term unemployed to find work?

You can leave your response in the comments section, or you can send us an email. We plan to collect some of the most compelling reports we get, and apply these highly personal and individual stories to shed some light on what it's like to be among the long-term jobless in today's downturn.

We're looking forward to hearing from you--and your ideas for weathering this crisis in long-term joblessness.

I've been unemployed since February 2008. I was laid-off because one of the partners hired a personal friend for the position I held as an HR Specialist. I am so tired of looking for work until I've given up hope. I have exhaused ALL unemployment benefits, over 45, female and a minority. Now what chance do you think I have of finding employment? I have volunteered approximately 1 year out of the 3 years I've been unemployed; trying to stay in-tuned with the working world. Have a daughter entering college in August of this year and just praying something good happen for us. Never thought I would be flat out on my face this long.
      • F 11 mths ago
I share your pain Lillie, I am 49 and out of work in 2008, however hired in Feb 2010 and worked for 10 months until a fellow long-term unemployed jerk decided to replace me with a minimum wage worker. However, the workforce is full of women who will give minority women a chance, so keep at it persistent will prevail, good luck.
      • mike 11 mths ago
Hang in ther Lilly,...things are bad but hopefully in 2012 we can create a new and better Washington.
If someone dosent repeale the nafta act,...its over...anyway...
      • pwp2999 11 mths ago
You are in the same boat as a lot of people. What does being a minority have to do with it? Do you deserve some special consideration? My children get just as hungry as yours. And how are you going to afford college?
    • t  •  11 mths ago
People, be aware that the times we are in now are not going to get any better. Try to hold on to the job yu have now, because there won't be anymore coming.
      • tstorm 11 mths ago
I agree. People who have jobs, even bad jobs, are holding on to them right now because there's nowhere else to go. This stops job openings for others looking to take their place. The same can be said of the housing industry. People aren't putting their homes on the market because they'll never sell for the asking price...meaning others won't be buying their houses... it's like the whole economy is constipated!!

I quit my job 7 months ago, but this was after a 2 year lay off. They brought me back into a still failing company so after 3 months I said, "Im done with you guys". I found a job about a month ago doing produce at Whole Foods. I make what I used to make in a week in two weeks and the work is just as back breaking. Basically what I am getting at is, if you dont have a job its because you either have a bad employment history, your old, or your not willing to work as cheap as immigrants. Get off your high horse and stop acting like you are worth every penny because in reality we are all expendable right now. If we get let go there is 30 other people to replace us in a heartbeat and 20 of them will work for less money.
      • StoopidFish 11 mths ago
That's great advice, UNTIL YOUR COMPANY CLOSES!! My husband has had his job for 19 years. He wasn't exactly happy BUT he was willing to stay forever because it was a job and he knows a bad job is better than no job. His company decided to send all their jobs overseas....and they won't last more than a year because of it!!

the unemployment numbers are much higher if you take into account those who never received unemployment benefits -- such as the "self employed".
      • rob 11 mths ago
as though any of them can count
      • MikeB 11 mths ago
That's me. Self employed for 5 years but have had nothing for the past 18 months. I know a lot of small business owners and many are struggling.
      • KenK 11 mths ago
In school from 2008-2010. Going on a year and a half and still no job. Dont qualify for unemployment benefits even though i have worked for the previous 20 years.
        Im not counted either.

I have been out of work for almost 2 1/2 years. I been searching tons and tons of job openings. But the same old thing, not hiring right now, just taking applications. I believe it's my age. Just over 50, worked for 1 company for 20 years, never missed a days work. In the process of losing my home. All of these places that say they can help with food and mortgage, is a joke. If you are not working, you don't qualify. If you are getting unemployment, you don't qualify. Been told I make to much unemployment for food stamps, and can't get a loan due to they want except unemployment as income. No where to turn but to live on the streets.
    • Eric  •  11 mths ago
i hope our politicians are listening to these stories. get our jobs back
    • Vegas Jack  •  11 mths ago
Out of work for almost 2 years, now it seems no one wants to hire because i'm unemployed. Congress needs to get off their duffs, and put a stop to this type of discrimination... and what amazes me is, high school kids with zero experience, can land a summer job in a matter of a few days of looking, while we more experienced workers are looked over for the same job
    • Gary  •  11 mths ago
Repeal the NAFTA laws and bring the jobs back to this country!! Tax every company that has moved their manufacturing sites out of this country to the point where it is no longer beneficial to export the work force overseas...
    • Shawn  •  11 mths ago
I have been very, very fortunate. I did 20 years in the Navy and got a job as soon as I retired. I have been employed since I was 17. I feel for the folks out there, but for the younger ones, the military is an option. For the rest... it has to start getting better soon.
    • Melanie  •  11 mths ago
I'm going on my 5th month of official unemployment, but before that I was freelance writing/editing. Since graduating from college (2009) I have yet to find a full-time job. I also apply for 10-20 jobs per week. I feel like the competition in my field is partially to blame, along with the collapsing world of print journalism and lower amount of jobs in online journalism. Two internships and and a freelance gig at a NYC magazine.. and nothing. Hang in there, everyone.

      TO THE LOOKOUT
§ On the other hand, have you given up?
I have not given up, however I am considering a suggestion my wife’s cancer doctor made. He did appreciate my knowledge, and skills, before I died however he is India Indian. It is his opinion considering the level of financial involvement China has in America right now I should sell my skills to the Chinese. He believes the Chinese will soon own the United States of America, and that will give me a head start before the U S A sinks.
§ If you ultimately landed a job, how did you do it?
Immediate indications are the only way I will get a job is my knowledge of American weapons technology, space technology, and industrial computer technology goes to the highest bidder over seas.
      § Any useful tips?
The companies I have developed prototype electronics for varied from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division of United Technologies (1000 to 2000 employees with a 20 square mile business compound) up to Hughes Aircraft Corporation (80,000 to 90,000 employees with a 200 to 300 square mile business compound). Immediate best solution is take my technical, and engineering level skills over seas to a nation that wants them. As I understand Pratt and Whitney, as well as the parent company United Technologies, have already moved over seas. It would appear
§ How should we go about making it easier for the long-term unemployed to find work?
The only thing I know is to make jobs that use all the skilled persons! The young, older, non veteran, and veteran persons should be included. The technology that I will use to supplement the gas mileage in my antique Chevrolet truck can also make an unlimited supply of pure water RIGHT NOW. The machine I brought with me from West Palm Beach Florida has been waiting to move the NASA transportation program forward, and has been waiting for me to get out of Jefferson County Florida. It has passed three live tests, one load test, and four-theoretical test before I left West Palm Beach Florida.

My brother in law is a certified Optician, worked for the same company for 20 years, a giant wholesaler moved in, and gobbled up the small practice in 2009, he went from making 45 grand a year to 10 dollars an hour, a 48 year old man collecting baskets from the parking lot of Vons market. He was offered part time work at wal mart making I think 8.50 an hour, but couldn't take it, because he was trying to save his home and needed more hours.

He tried every field, either his age was a factor, or his credit which took a hit when the economy shifted.

I wish our elected officials would sit down and talk with their constituents who don't have special interest knocking down the doors of congress to get their agendas passed.

The most vulnerable seem to have been cast aside......

After I left my job in August 2005, I started my own business. Yay! The American Dream--working for yourself! Hah! After doing OK the first year, I thought that my brother, who was the creative part of the business, and I should move in together. After all, why spend money for two apartments when he was at my place most of the time? So I found a new apartment for us (so he could have his own bedroom), and four unforeseen circumstances occurred that sealed our doom, including the tanking of the business due to the economy. I had no unemployment benefits, and had gotten a lump sum retirement benefit from my company. It became apparent that I had to look for a job. Now came all the excuses: I hadn't worked in my field for some time; I had no corporate experience; I had no (fill in the blank) experience; you had your own business, why do you want to work for us?, and on and on. My savings and retirement have been exhausted. I had to go on food stamps, then apply for cash assistance, which, as of July 1, has been cut. So my brother, who is on disability, has the only income in the house, rent is about 90% of it, and we are a bit short because he has a spend down to meet each month in order to get his meds. How do I pay for the utilities? If I don't pay for the phone, the internet is disconnected at the very least. I won't get SS until November. And employers think it's fair to only consider the "currently employed?" What happened to caring for your fellow human being? I worked for over 40 years, and now I have nothing to show for it. Some American dream!

i still remember Reagans trickle down economic theory.Go easy on the rich and they will provide jobs for the middle class. All lies. They only tighten their grip on all the money they get and if it trickles,it must be trickling in India and China.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  11 mths ago
Why you need to know it anyway? Would you find me a job if I tell you all the bs I've been goin trough in the hope of finding some work? No you wouldn't, therefore I won't even bother telling you. What's the use anyway?
    • Think about It  •  11 mths ago
I find it hard to believe people are still on the Republican Democrat kick! Jobs have fled to China and India since Nixon was in office. The RUSH to outsource jobs overseas was sped up after the INTERNET made contracts, CAD/CAM, and customer service doable on the computer. Corporate taxes SHOULD be higher BECAUSE the US should be competing with itself...not Vietnam...and NOT Indonesia. Corporations pay next to nothing ie:Exxon, GE, Home Depot, etc. Compare price markup on a wrench from China compared to Snap On. This whole idea of becoming a SERVICE ECONOMY is showing itself now. We are broke, without real estate to live, and our kids pay huge college fees for what. Your kid will have $100k in debt to Harvard and be fighting to work at Mickey D's...

I have been out of work for a year. I went to PCI training and got certified as a Medical Office Assistant. They were suppose to help me find a job. I finished my externship a week ago, and now am sitting at home, with $8000 in student loans and no job. Unemployment will run out soon.
