Red Sox send ill-timed tweet during Ferguson decision

It was a great day for the Red Sox off the field, as they reportedly locked up Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez to long-term deals, but the same can't be said for their social media team.

As news filtered out from Ferguson, Mo., that the grand jury had decided not to charge police officer Darren Wilson in the August shooting death of Michael Brown Jr., the official Red Sox Twitter account sent out this tweet, which was promptly deleted.

The Red Sox didn't send the only regrettable sports tweet in the aftermath of the Ferguson decision. As noted above by Josh Tucker — the ex-Dodgers' social media manager — Peter King's "indictment" tweet was no better, though King later said he wasn't watching the news.

Surely the Red Sox's tweet was not meant to be received in a malicious manner but it's a misstep nonetheless with the attention and outpouring of emotion that followed the grand jury's decision.

Odds are the tweet was scheduled to go live at a certain time and in a stroke of bad luck just happened to coincide with the Ferguson announcement. It's a reality of the fast-moving social media world we live in and a mistake that teams should learn from going forward.
