Justin Allgaier and David Gilliland crashed violently at Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- David Gilliland had the throttle matted down and his car near the outside wall. He was hoping like hell to avoid the spinning car of Justin Allgaier.

But watching from above, it was evident that Gilliland's hopes weren't going to be a reality. Allgaier was coming up the track too quickly and Gilliland had nowhere to go.

The result was a vicious collision on the frontstretch at Kansas Speedway on Saturday night that totaled both cars.

Gilliland hit Allgaier's car so hard that his car got airborne and subsequently caught on fire. After both cars came to a rest, both drivers were able to walk away from their terminally wounded machines.

The accident started when A.J. Allmendinger got loose racing Paul Menard off turn four. Allgaier was behind Allmendinger, and dove to the inside to avoid him. However, Allmendinger clipped Allgaier's right rear and sent him careening towards the outside wall and into the path of Gilliland.
