Nick Young: God came to me in a dream to give me the nickname 'Swaggy P' (Video)
Here's what Los Angeles Lakers scorer Nick Young said back in December when NBA TV's "GameTime" crew asked him where the remarkable nickname "Swaggy P" came from:
"I think if you look good, you play good. So you know, the 'Swaggy' starts with how I come in the arena — how I dress, the shoes I wear. The 'P' is a mystery. I can't tell you that right now. I might write a book someday."
And here's what he told SLAM back in February:
“The P is a mystery. I can’t give that secret out yet,” Young says. “It was one of my first nicknames, so nobody really knew about it and I just kept it a secret. People kept asking about it, so I started saying it’s a mystery. In a couple years I’ll give y’all something.”
Evidently, Swaggy's feeling a bit more forthcoming now that the Lakers' season is long over, because he's elected not to hold off for a few years or make us wait for the book — instead, he's giving us the video-on-demand version:
Here's what Young had to say there:
"God came in a dream [and] talked to me, and he gave me that name. I was like, 'You know what, God? That is a funny name and I might need to run with it,' and ever since then, I've been calling myself 'Swaggy P.' It's a household name now."
So ... Swaggy Prophet? Swaggy Psalms? Swaggy Peter/Swaggy Paul? Swaggy Philippians? Swaggy Proverbs? Oh, man, I hope it's not Swaggy Pontius Pilate. Well, wait, that'd be Swaggy PP. Whew, OK.
Whether the "P" was divinely inspired, or this is just another instance of Swaggy talking that good brand of lovable nonsense, is somewhat immaterial. Here's what isn't: We now know that Nick Young believes God speaks to him and tells him to do things as swaggily as possible. So the next time you see him dribble in a circle for seven seconds and hoist a contested 29-footer with half the shot clock left, keep in mind that he might not just be doing something dumb — he might be catching the Holy Ghost, communicating with a higher power, and playing basketball in tongues.
