Asiana crash captured on amateur video
A man recording video of planes landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday caught the crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 on tape.
Fred Hayes, who was walking with his wife along San Francisco Bay, told CNN he thought the Boeing 777, which was coming from Seoul, Korea, looked odd as it approached the runway.
"When I caught the plane coming into view, everything looked fine at first until I kind of fixed my gaze on him, and I seen his nose up in the air," Hayes said. "And then I just totally locked on him. I thought he was going to take off and go up, and then he just kept going down."
Two people were killed and 182 were hospitalized in the crash of the plane, which had 307 people on board. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
"My initial thought was that with the nose pitched up in the degree that it was that the pilot was maybe trying to divert the landing," Hayes continued. "As you can see in the video, it was pretty low at that point and that may or may not have been the case."
"Look at that one," Hayes can be heard saying in the video. "Look at how his nose is up in the air."
As the plane slammed into the seawall, Hayes watched in horror. "Oh my God," he said as debris billowed into the air. "Oh, my God. Oh, Lord have mercy."
