Ray Lewis’ climb up Mount Kilimanjaro ends because of fever and swollen foot

Even for a player who played 17 seasons in the NFL, climbing a 19,000-foot mountain was too taxing to his body.

Because so many of our readers enjoy hearing the exploits of former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, here's the update from his climb up Mount Kilimanjaro: Lewis had to stop because he had a fever that spiked and his foot started to swell up. Lewis had been part of a group climbing the huge mountain to raise money and awareness for clean water projects in East Africa.

On the TackleKili website, they offered an update on Lewis having to drop out.

"(B)y evening Ray knew something was wrong," a report on the site said. "A fever spiked and his foot, which had been injured and re-injured during his 17 year career, began to swell. This was not good. In the end, Ray’s decision was to let the team move on without him, rather than hold them back or put himself in a position where an injury which requires surgery could become even more complicated. As always, his team backed his play. So while Ray re-focused his service to this cause at a lower altitude, his team began the ascent on behalf of those in desperate need of clean water."

Now Lewis can rest up and get ready for his ESPN gig, and judging by the comments and emails over the last 24 hours, many of you are looking forward to that.
