“Monty” the cow draws attention for the unusual spot on her forehead

J&M Ladd Farm in Alburgh, Vermont has a very special month old calf named "Monty," with a distinctive spot on her forehead. Farmer Jed Ladd told WCAX Channel 3 News, "My first notice was the complete outline of the white with the black. Then as I took a few minutes and looked at it. I said, ‘Boy,’ I said, ‘That looks like Vermont.’" Jed’s sister, Mary Ladd, immediately identified the spot as their home state.

The farm has been in the Ladd family for five generations and has been the birthplace of around 2,000 calves. Jed said, "I've been breeding the cows since 1979 and keeping track of the genetics and that’s the first time I’ve seen that."

Jed’s daughter, Meghan, is in charge of naming the farm’s cows and said she ruminated a while before deciding on the unique bovine’s name. "I wanted to give her something that was really fitting and I asked everyone else and they thought too and they all thought something with Vermont would be pretty fitting,” said Meghan. So I just played with the word ‘Vermont’ and came up with Monty."

Jed Ladd said, "I'm glad to have a cow that's born in Vermont, that has Vermont on it and I'm a proud Vermonter too."

The Monty isn’t the only member of the animal kingdom with special markings. A quick scan of the internet yields a number of creatures with unusual markings. Here’s a quick sampling of the ones we liked… “Hamilton” the hipster cat is a California feline with what appears to be a white handlebar mustache. Another cat with facial hair is “Sam” whose all white body is accented with two black eyebrows. Finally, a Chihuahua from Japan named “Heart-Kun” has a noticeable brown heart shaped spot on his body. He fathered “Kokoro-chan,” who shares the lovely marking. Even Kokoro-chan’s cousin “Love-kun” has the distinctive heart spot.
