Repo man takes car with a sleeping 4-year-old in backseat
A 4-year-old child in Memphis, Tennessee is now home safe after being taken on a ride while he slept in the backseat of a car as it was repossessed.
Little Kevin was with his grandmother Ruth Brown on the way home from grocery shopping when he fell asleep in the backseat. Brown told WREG News Channel 3 that her daughter’s boyfriend was outside near the car while she unloaded groceries from the vehicle. The grandma went inside the house to find someone to carry Kevin, who was too heavy for her, out of the car. She says that no more than 5 minutes passed and when Brown returned, the car was gone.
“I just thought somebody had came up in here and stole it, straight wired it, because I had the key,” said Brown. But the white Toyota Corolla was actually repossessed. Sam Young, manager of Cooper and Son Auto Sales where Kevin was found 30 minutes later explained, “When they go in and get a repo, they have the keys. They go they get the car. They drive off. That’s all there is.” The repo man had no idea Kevin was asleep in the backseat.
Jerrica Leverson, Kevin’s mother was understandably upset saying, “They should’ve checked the car, and when you saw the child in the car, come bring him to the door. Let him come in and let him know you’re fixin’ to pull the car.”
Others are asking why the boy was ever left in the car in the first place. Ruth Brown defends her actions, though she admits that like the repo man who took the car, someone else could have taken it with Kevin in the backseat. WREG reports that, “authorities don’t seem to think Brown did anything wrong. Police have not said that she will face any charges and officials at the Department of Children Services say they are not investigating and have not been contacted about the incident.”
