Greg Leeson has a beautiful house for sale in the borough of Dunmore, Pennsylvania. For $144,000 you can have a 112-year-old Victorian home, complete with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. It features bay windows, a study with stainglass windows, a moving bookcase, a large attic, and a wet bar, amongst other things. There’s only one small catch: it’s haunted.
According to the real estate website Zillow’s in-house blog, Mr. Leeson of Pennsylvania is putting up his home sale with the caveat that it features paranormal activity. In the description of the home he writes, “Slightly haunted. Nothing serious, though. e.g. The sounds of phantom footsteps. A strange knocking sound followed by a very quiet (hardly noticeable, even) scream at 3:13am, maybe once a week. Twice a week, tops. And the occasional ghastly visage lurking behind you in the bathroom mirror. Even still, this occurs very rarely and only in the second floor bathroom.” Oh ok, well as long as the scream at 3:13am is “barely noticeable.”
Leeson wrote this in a fit of honesty. He told Zillow, ““When I was writing it, I had been thinking about it, and I went back and forth. The way I worded it — I was trying to keep it light. I have been reading online, and people saying you are supposed to disclose it. I don’t know the laws here, but thought better safe than sorry.”
Zillow did some research to see if, in fact, Leeson was legally obligated to tell people about it being haunted. It turns out – not so much. Philadelphia lawyer told the site, ““Knowledge of psychological impairments such as deaths, murders and haunted houses are not required [material] disclosures under Pennsylvania law. How do you disclose a haunting? Even if court says yes it is a material defect, you have to prove it actually exists. How [do you] prove it? Call Ghostbusters?”
As for the house, it looks like Leeson won’t have a hard time selling it. He told Zillow the publicity has helped and he’s been getting a lot of offers.
