Avril Lavigne’s Totally Insane ‘Hello Kitty’ Video Splits Opinion On Twitter

Av’s certainly made an impact

She’s known for her pop-grunge sound.

But Avril Lavinge has more than changed up her musical style on new single ‘Hello Kitty,’ with the accompanying music video dividing fans on the Twittersphere.

The 29-year-old’s wholly insane video, shot on location in Tokyo, sees Avril singing in both English and Japanese, dressed in a cupcake skirt and leather bodice.

Joined by a group of harajuku girls, Avril leads a group dance (yes, Avril now dances) before falling back to her faithful guitar.

Fun Fact Time: The song was co-written by Avril and her husband, Nickelback lead man Chad Kroeger.

While Avril was clearly very happy with the video, tweeting it to her 15.6 million followers yesterday, critics on Twitter were divided.

One user wrote: “Avril Lavigne's "Hello Kitty" video is a nightmare. A nightmare!”

While another wrote: “Not to be cynical or anything but I'm actually pretty sure that Hello Kitty by @AvrilLavigne is actually the OPPOSITE of music.”

Other users accused the video of being racist, writing: “Should I be angry at Avril Lavigne's "Hello Kitty" because it's racist or because it's terrible?”

Another claimed: “Avril calls her song Hello Kitty + asian backup dancers, Im sorry but if she werent so vapid Id call it racist but she dont know any better.”

A host of media outlets also all viciously slammed the video with Billboard in the US calling it 'an embarrassment in any language'.

But it wasn’t all bad news, with fans deeming the video as a tribute to her Japanese fans: “I feel like Avril wrote Hello Kitty to thank her Japanese fans for their incredible support. And she likes that kinda crazy songs, you know.”

Others simply enjoyed Av’s new direction, with one fan writing: “I actually love the Hello Kitty music video tbh. Avril is having fun and smiling and being happy and that's what makes me happy.”

Love it or loathe it, she’s certainly got everyone talking.
