Carrie Underwood proved to legions of football fans last year that she could ably fill Faith Hill's high-heeled shoes in the role of Sunday Night Football siren. So, it's not as if the former American Idol champ actually needs any help ushering in the 2014 season. Nonetheless, Underwood has been granted an all-star backup team that's sure to keep her from dropping the ball.
Underwood will be accompanied by 11 of the NFL's best players, including the Manning brothers and 2013's Super Bowl champ quarterback Russell Wilson, when she blasts out "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" on the SNF season-opener Sept. 7.
All told, the staggering roster Underwood has assembled comes from the top contending-teams, collectively accounting for 44 Pro Bowl selections, five Super Bowl rings, three Super Bowl MVP trophies, and eight first-round draft picks.
Granted the football pros can't sing as well as the country chanteuse, but it seems some of them do give their best try in a behind-the-scenes video released Wednesday by NBC. "They might want me to replace Carrie Underwood… out of all the players, I'm definitely the best singer," boasts Philadelphia Eagle superstar running back LeSean McCoy. (On the flip side is San Francisco's quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who admits "I wasn't singing, I was just going along with the words.")
There will also be some other interesting shenanigans — as Green Bay Packer (and SNF open veteran) Clay Matthews reveals, "This year they've got me stage-diving."
Overall, it promises to be a great time. Just ask Chicago's Brandon Marshall, who makes his SNF open debut here, and claims, "I've been waiting nine years to do this."
Gotta see it to believe it? Just check out the clip above revealing some of the action. Even if you're not a sports fan, Underwood's rockin' vocals — and glittery mini-dresses — are worthy enough for a tune-in.
The star-studded extravaganza can be seen preceding NBC's SNF premiere game on Sept. 7 between the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts.
