Camden Named 2nd Most Dangerous City in America

    Chris Lipczynski, AroundPhilly

Sometimes, just for a moment, I find myself forgetting that Camden actually exists. It's not that I actively choose to block it out of my mind, like my 15th birthday party, but it's probably because Philadelphians only go to Camden for one of two things: the Aquarium or a Phish show.

But Camden, like a "troubled teen" who's appeared on multiple episodes of Maury, just can't get its act together. And much in the same way said troubled team needs discipline from an overbearing, ex-military/security guard, Camden needs help.

Yesterday, for the second year in a row, Camden, which has had 48 homicides so far (not going this morning), was named the 2nd most dangerous city in America according to the 2011 CQ Press City Crime Rankings. Flint, Michigan, which has appeared in more than one Michael Moore documentary, came in first, with Detroit, St. Louis and Oakland not far behind.

City officials and police have stated that massive budget problems and a deteriorating infrastructure have eroded the city's ability to keep the peace. In an article for The Inky, one resident summed up Camden's woes with what is surely the scariest quote you'll hear all day, "We don't have any real policing in Camden. They're just out here to pick up the bodies."

Seems we may want to start calling the Delaware River "River Styx" for good measure.

lol 48 murders? That's it. How is that dangerous when places like Chicago and NYC have over 400 murders a year and aren't even top places. East NY, Brooklyn has about 40 or so murders and has around the same population as Camden. These lists are jokes...

Until you change the 'Culture" and the priorities of the actual people who live there, no amount of Gov. assistance or program will improve the living conditions or the high crime rates. I grew up in Newark, NJ (Ferry Street) and seen firsthand how the Portuguese started to arrive, without knowing a single word of English or most without any schooling and in a matter of a few short years, they completely transformed the Ironbound section of Newark into a little European Oasis with thriving businesses, cobbled streets and immaculate homes. So what is the difference? Why do the Portuguese come here and in a very short time own beautiful homes and successful businesses? They work like mules that's why. 10-12 hours days in heavy construction and saving every penny.
Now answer me this very simple question: Why is it that black Americans who are born here, know the language, and go to school are still 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations on welfare and food stamps and groups like the Portuguese get here and immediately prosper and become productive Americans?

Raquel, watch the movie Precious. The answer is there. Self perpetuating.

if the animals stopped selling drugs to each other and breeding uncontrollably as they do most of these problems would go away. You all can't be ballers and rappers and pimps, open a book and try and educate yourselves.

NO ONE SHOULD BE CALLED AN ANIMAL!...I dont agree with what the dealers are doing...but often times they have nothing else...I know this is no excuse..and I am not using it as an excuse...they must still pay their respects to the law...but the truth is the problems they face are generational...as someone said..its just a product of many years of neglect and submission and dispensation which all resulted in this menagerie...the sad truth is that THE UNITED STATES IS FAST BECOMING LIKE CAMDEN...the law has disappeared because it has been undermined for so long..."I'VE BEEN DOWN SO GODDAMNED LONG THAT IT LOOKS LIKE UP TO ME..." from the doors....lol.
      • SO12 5 mths ago
generational. is the problem there mother end grandmother has beating the system to death
      • DeputyDawg 5 mths ago
It is generational. And the law is undermined, you're right, M. Can't afford to keep em all in prisons.

YEAH BUT HOW OFTEN DO THE CITIZENS OF CAMDEN ACTUALLY SUPPORT THE POLICE? Listen most people being arrested and shot are not innocents...if you are going to laugh about it and wink and make like "everybody breaks the rules sometimes...especially you are the one breaking the rules" YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE THE COPS!!! THE COPS DONT MAKE ENOUGH TO RISK THEIR LIVES AND HAVE THOSE SAME PEOPLE THEY ARE TRYING TO HELP TURN AGAINST THEM!!!! I have seen this time and time again and its absurd...MAN IF YOU WANT THE LAW YOU WILL HAVE TO SUPPORT THE LAW AND LIVE BY THE LAW....THE CITIZENS OF CAMDEN HAVE APPARENTLY NOT REACHED THAT DECISION YET...AND I SOMETIMES THINK THIS WHOLE NATION HAS NOT YET REACHED THAT DECISION YET....you want law...learn to live and support the law...even when its you that is being limited by those laws.

        @ Mirrorman

That's just ridiculous. The vast majority of Camden residents are law abiding citizens. To paint the situation otherwise is, at best, ignorance.
      • DeputyDawg 5 mths ago
Getting that way in Paterson and Trenton too. Don't know about Newark. Scary all right.

i wonder how it compares the corporate muggings, global genocides, and industrial rapings of white collar criminals?
      • charleybronson 5 mths ago
Horse crap. You don't even know what you're spewing our you are just reciting the same crap all the rest of the clueless libs spew. Go do some research and find out the truth.
      • anti-american 5 mths ago
It doesn't compare at all. The people of Camden are their own worst enemies. YOUR brothers and neighbors tagged up that house, not the police, not government goons, not political idiots. Not a single person besides a welfare abusing black would dare live in Camden and that tagged up house sends a powerful message. If the citizens of Camden don't want the place to change, become attractive to business, residential, commercial, and industrial atmospheres again no one else will. It starts with you people, get a job, go to school, finish it, repay the city and maybe others will want to come around.

In order to answer your question, I need to know what a "Corporate Mugging" and "Industrial Raping" is. Global genocide is much worse, but what the hell does global genocide have to do with Camden, NJ????? And there hasn't been a "global genocide" since the Nazi's invaded Poland, France, and Russia, & The Imperialist Japanese invaded China in WWII. There are "National" Genocides going on in a myriad of other nations, but again, what does that have to do with Camden, NJ.

Here's a question for you. Have you ever wondered why the cities such as Camden, NJ, Newark, NJ, Detroit MI, Flint, MI, Gary, IN, etc, etc (You know... the high crime rated areas FOR DECADES) and their populations continue to vote for Democrat/ Liberal politicians who keep promising to improve things but never do and have often made things worse, yet these same people have the AUDACITY to call Republicans and Conservatives "racist," "bigoted," and every other bad name in the book???????????????????????????????

Will it EVER occur to you that regardless what these Domocrate and liberal politicians say and promise that they just may NOT be the friends of the poor and downtrodden they say they are????????????????????????

Things that make you go Hmmmmmmmmmmm???.

        Just a thought....

    • Arthur  •  5 mths ago
I got your sarcasm. For the record according to my search~~49% of mugging, homicide, drug trafficking, robbery and violence in America is done by blacks about 30% is from the Hispanic community and the rest is well... from everybody else. So I really don't blame people for being scared when they see us.

Garbage in garbage out. Would be interesting to note the political party running Camden forever! It would also be interesting to note the amount of government money poured into this city over the decades. How about taking a look at the government housing projects built in the 60's to see how they are doing. Same questions could be asked of Newark, Patterson, Trenton all not far behind Camden.

I want to pose a question to everyone regarding the residents of Camden but first the fasts:
      1. Their education system is the worst they dump illiterate young adults out every year.
      2. They unemployment rate in Camden is sky high.
      3. The jobs that do exist are very low wage.

So the only work these residents do have are in the illicit area.

These kids have a choice - sell Big Macs for $7 an hour or sell their bodies for $70 an hour or better yet crack for $700 a day - what would you choose?

The economics are broken thus the city is broken or is the problem bigger?

camden is scum of NJ just like newark
    • dawg  •  5 mths ago
Camden has its flaws, like every city, but at least CAMDEN KEEPS IT REAL, unlike places like Scarsdale, Aspen, Beverly Hills, etc. which are full of boring flatasses who have fake tans, fake lips, fake breasts, etc. trying to look like the beautiful but oppressed people of Camden.

Question for the bloggers; I know that most towns are in essence subjugated to the state and country... So the Second amendment is always paramount when discussing the right to bear arms... But can a state allow a town/city like Camden to temporarily amended the law? Or create it's on individual law regarding guns?? Opinions please....

This article reminded an old friend from Treton, N.J. drop by for a visit for the Thanksgiving holiday. He was an ex-S. Vietnamese army soldier and we got around to talking about various cities in N.J. When Camden came up, he told me in Vietnamese it means DO NOT ENTER!
WOW, even in a foreign language this city means DANGER. Come on people who lives in Camden, get y'alls butts together and get y'alls city cleaned up and respectable again....doesn't anyone care?
