Eagles: David Akers says ‘thanks’ to Philadelphia with I-95 billboard

Maybe you've seen it: a billboard from former Eagles' kicker David Akers has gone up along I-95 near the sports complex in South Philadelphia, thanking fans for the past 12 years.

Akers did more than his share to help the Eagles win games, during and after the regular season, and fans loved him.

Now that he's a San Francisco 49er and moving his family to the west coast, he says he felt compelled to say "thank you" to Philadelphia.

"It was a wonderful 12 years and I truly felt blessed to be a part of all that," Akers told KYW Newsradio this morning, "and to do something small to show appreciation was pretty much a no-brainer."

At the time of his departure, Akers was the longest tenured athlete in Philadelphia (12 years).

So, his message of thanks is a billboard for thousands of northbound commuters to see as they pass Lincoln Financial Field. It reads in part, "Thank you for your support on and off the field. May God bless you all."

Akers will be back at the Linc on October 2nd, wearing a Niners' jersey, for that 1 PM game against the Eagles.
