Hollywood calling: Senator ready for his close up

    Politically Foul

What happens when a politician trades the C-SPAN camera for the movie camera? Senator Patrick Leahy is a mild mannered judiciary committee chairman by day, Gotham crime fighter by night. Leahy made a cameo in the Batman movie The Dark Knight back in 2008, telling Heath Ledger's character the Joker: "We're not intimidated by thugs." Right before the Joker sticks a knife to his throat. But the die-hard Batman fan wasn't scared off, and is returning for a cameo in the summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.

Will this Batman movie measure up?

"This one has a bit of danger, but nowhere near what I faced with the Joker," Leahy local Vermont station NECN about his role.

Almost as scary to watch this week:  Snooki and Newt fist bumping on late night television. That's right, former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich shared air time and traded jokes with the Jersey Shore reality TV star. A match made in TV heaven.

Missing the match-up on the big screen this week was the kisser-in-chief. Obama was rebuffed on the kiss cam at the USA vs. Argentina pre-Olympic basketball game, though the First Lady accepted the challenge the second time around —- bringing big applause from the fans, and especially daughter Malia.

Kissing on camera is one thing, but what about eating while the cameras are rolling? Well, that's a political rite of passage. It's also another subject over which President Obama and Mitt Romney disagree. On a hot day, Obama tucks into his ice cream cone with a spoon, Romney just dives right in.

At least they didn't try and eat corn dogs. That is an uncomfortable picture for everyone involved. You have to watch the video to see what we mean.

By Elvina Nawaguna WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House threatened on Wednesday to veto a Republican bill to switch federal student loan interest rates to a market-based system, arguing the plan would create more uncertainty for students and families. Under the legislation introduced by Republican Representatives John Kline of Minnesota and Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans would be recalculated every year and pegged to 10-year Treasury notes, plus 2.5 percentage points. Currently, interest rates on those loans are set by the government. ...
