Next Steve Jobs or Mini Albert Einstein?

    Political Punch

The White House invited some of the smartest kids in the country to come show off their inventions the other day. The White House's East Room — normally a place for prime time press conferences and State Dinners was transformed  into a science fair. ABC's Senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper took a tour of the displays and shows us what these little geniuses have come up with. Maybe there's a future Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein among them?

Take Taylor Wilson who says when he was 14 years old, he developed a nuclear fusion reactor. Now only 17 he's developed a tool that could be a big help for counter-terrorism -- detecting Uranium-235, Weapons Grade Plutonium and Highly Enriched Uranium — using a not-so-rare ingredient: water.

Or 14 year old Benjamin Hylak, who designed an interactive robot to allow him to Skype with his grandmother, and also find her pills and pour her a glass of water. Amazing!

And you know the old saying necessity is the mother of invention? Well, 12-year-old Ma'Kese Wesley and 11-year-old Isis Thompson heard about the deadly bacteria outbreaks on cantaloupe melons last year and came up with a high tech lunch box that zaps fruits and vegetables using UV light and makes them safe to eat.

These kids are all pretty incredible. Enough to make a White House reporter feel a little intimidated.

detecting uranium through use of water sounds pretty useful & sustainable. & he's only 17.

and our government is so smart we are gonna post it on the internet so EVERYONE knows... :/
      • El Rock 3 mths ago
....if everyone knows that we can detect it with water, they probably won't try to pull a fast one on us! All about perspective

This is the kind of news I like to hear. Not garbage like Snooki, Kim, etc. . .
      • harry pie 3 mths ago
but snooki can give a bj
      • DJ Spoke Wrench 3 mths ago
Snooki couldn't get her mouth around my head. Way to big.

This is a great story. We need to showcase intellectual achievement more often in this country.

with the level of ignorance on yahoo I was surprised not to see a thumbs down on your post. Typically the posts that make the MOST sense tend to have a few negative straglers :)

        well said.

Would be nice. But with the world of morons in which we live, there wouldn't be much news

It is wonderful to see attention given to high achieving children. Education is the key to the future!

Hellohhhh. All kids are important; I am sick to death of the adulation of "gifted" kids when most of them have had tutors galore, unlimited money spent on them, free from learning disabilities, and lots of other advantages. Nothing make me angrier than to be herded into a school auditorium to watch National Honor Society inductions. When I studied each student, I saw they were the privileged kids. So I am not too impressed with "high achievers" because anyone with advantages could do the same.

I agree, movies and TV still promote irresponsibility, crime, promiscuity, and hate of parents as the way to live.

these kids are something believe it or not kids can achieve at something beside throwing a ball

don't care. they should just be who they are and develop the talents they have. Einstein didnt' receive press news until he actually made something life CHANGING. this is the exact same as showcasing 11 year old basketball "stars", they never turn out well due to premature exposure.
      • gonzalo 3 mths ago
hey you forgot they can catch and hit a ball also!

Please do not mention Einstein and Jobs in the same sentence. Jobs couldn't hold Einstein's lab notes.

awesome how the 17 year old called out the government or spending 100's of thousands of dollars on something that he made for 100 dollars. sounds about right. the only thing our government is good at is overspending.

Nice video, it's great to see kids helping out, we have a long way to go to bounce back, it's nice to know that we have a rising generation that understands our current situation

A 14 year old developed a Nuclear Fusion reactor? Really? Where is it?
    • Guy SF  •  3 mths ago
We don't need a new Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein. These kids just need to be who they are and develop the talents they have.
    • FriendlyTxn  •  Durant, Oklahoma  •  3 mths ago
How many of these kids have been home schooled? Inquiring minds want to know.
    • Jocko  •  3 mths ago
We do produce some intelligent kids in this country unfortunately the media focuses on the Hollywood types and their lavish and wild lifestyles.
    • Wally  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  3 mths ago
all these kids are inventing devices that will lead to more jobs. job breakdown: 1 inventor (American), 500 programmers/engineers (indian), 5000 manufacturing employees (chinese).

As more education is based on the mandated tests we wll see less of these creative items. Basing everything on the ability to take tests is taking away the time allowed for helping students to create. We have already taken away classes like shop, many music classes, and art. All of these helped let kids do things different from others. But now everyone must be the same. All need to be prepared to go to college even if they do not want to go to college or cannot afford to go. When are the law makers of our great country going to get the message that education is preparing for he fuure not passing tests.
    • Blake  •  Wichita, Kansas  •  3 mths ago
Its very sad that there is only a small amount of text to go with a story of this magnitude, when a story of a celebrity acting like and idiot or having a baby gets two pages worth

Einstein and Jobs...? give me a break, Jobs was lucky, Einstein was Smart
