    What Romney is REALLY Thinking

    Top Line

If we could peer into Mitt Romney's brain, what would we see? What is he thinking and what would he be saying if he could be totally honest?

That's what ABC News Political Director Amy Walter and Yahoo News Washington Bureau Chief David Chalian chewed over today on Top Line. Amy says the first thing Romney must be thinking is, "Santorum? Seriously?!"

Rick Santorum lost his last Senate race by a huge margin and Romney is clobbering him on fundraising by even bigger margins now. And yet, according to recent polls, Santorum is now leading, or at least tied, with Romney. How did this happen, the former Massachusetts governor must be wondering? And what can be done to stop it? With Santorum connecting with Republican base voters on many key values where Romney is  struggling,  there are big challenges ahead for the Romney campaign.

And another thought that our political experts believe must surely be swirling in Mitt Romney's head this week has to be: "I'll just let the tea party pick my VP."

David Chalian believes Mitt Romney is thinking that he has to figure out a way to convince the conservative base to get fired up for the general election and that he won't disappoint them if he makes it to the Oval Office.  Perhaps the Number Two slot on the ticket is an enticement.

And finally — the one thing you just have to assume Mitt Romney is thinking when he sees the "Dogs Against Romney" signs outside the Westminster Dog Show this week, or any time he picks up a Gail Collins column in the NYTimes — is "why didn't we just get a cat?"

Who cares if Santorum is connecting with repub base voters? It is the independents who need to be won over if they are to win. It's all about the math guys.

And as an Independent, he is not my guy.
      • towboat joe 3 mths ago

If he can't figure out why Santorum is cleaning his clock, then he has no business running for President !!!!!!

Mitt's biggest issue is that over the years he has supported everything Obama is doing at one time or another. It won't be hard for Obama to show ads with him all over the place.

I am pretty sure he is thinking: I will win....I deserve to win. An ego the size of Montana will do that.
      • rhoda 3 mths ago
You need a huge ego to be a politician in the first place. Unfortunately, that is all he has.
      • Henry Kenneth 3 mths ago
Please don't associate montana with that #$%$

Why Harry, do you suspect that Mitt Romney is really Peter Lupus (Willie) in disguise?
    • M n N  •  3 mths ago
This part of the second sentence pretty much sums up Romney:
". . .g and what would he be saying IF HE COULD BE TOTALLY HONEST?"
Isn't that always the problem with politicians?
    • Sidd  •  3 mths ago
Suspicions confirmed... The Republicans didn't like McCain and four years later still can't find anyone in their own party they like. What does that tell you?
    • Robertt  •  3 mths ago
Too bad Huntsman isn't running. Oh yeah....he was too well spoken, intelligent, normal for the redneck Republicans to accept.
