Santorum’s Football Fumble and Other Stumbles from the Campaign Trail

    Politically Foul

Politics is not a game exactly, but there are rules. And when you break them you're running Politically Foul! Each week, we call the penalties, conversions and downs  as we see them on the political playing field.

Rick Santorum sprinted into Akron, Ohio this week before checking the playbook. A few miles from the Cleveland Brown's home turf,  Santorum attempted to start a pep rally for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His revelry call, "Is this Steelers country?" was met with boos from the crowd.  One of the first rules of campaigning…know where you are.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney attempted to lean on some not so recent pop culture at this week's Republican debate, when he paused after an applause line  and quipped, "As George Costanza would say, when they are applauding, stop.'

Whoops — that wasn't actually a Costanza quote from Seinfeld, it was Jerry Seinfeld from "Seinfeld."  Although the real Costanza, actor Jason Alexander, tweeted in response: "Thrilled Gov. Romney enjoys my old character. I enjoyed the character he used 2 b 2. If he'd embrace that again, he'd b a great candidate."

Ouch! Romney got sacked by Constanza!

And back in Washington, President Obama stole the halftime show of a star-studded performance at the White House this week. The not-so-modest Obama received a microphone hand off from Buddy Guy and, despite an initial attempt at a fake out, the President completed the play and joined in the singing of 'Sweet Home Chicago."

He was assisted by a hard hitting block on the mic by blues legend BB King before retreating out of bounds. Foul:  false modesty! For someone who was reluctant to play, you warmed up to the spotlight in a hurry.

Those are the politically plays we flagged this week. Tell us your best and worst moments and we'll survey the field again next week.

These politicians are all alike. They try to make you believe they are really interested in your life and are interested in your city, state or area of the country, when in fact they could give a #$%$ about any of us.

Roger that, Ego trips and money. That's all they are in it for.

Some will do better than others for the country and one still needs to vote for the one that will be better for the country. Less government is a better government period. You don't get but 10 cents on a dollar for anything the government does for you so why have them do anything?

Politics has gone Hollywood. (And in some cases 'Bollywood.')
Stick with the issues at hand, present your agenda. Quit trying to 'suck up' to the voters in the region you visiting, because more often then not you screw it up..!
Enough with the showboating, the Super PACs, and anonymous donors, we as American voters deserve to know from the onset, who is in your pocket, because this will affect how you would operate our Nation.

I'll believe corporations are people too,
        when Texas executes one.
      • glad2benotU 3 mths ago
        EXACTLY, JB!!!

secondly, people still worship at the feet of THE ONE and TRUE "Hollywood Celebrity Messiah", REAGAN, so why are you trying to make a point about that now? ...THIRTY years later?

anyway, other than that lack of cognizance, your comment is actually pretty spot on. ...too bad the SCotUS screwed all of us by allowing corporate and foreign money to be slung around wherever any candidates want. where do you think these SuperPACs came from & WHY do you think they've never been even noticed until now? because the SCotUS legalized political corruption in a way that's never been allowed.
      • Dcdandyman 3 mths ago
Yep. We would never see a sitting president performing Sweet Home Chicago. He has more important stuff to do.

It is really difficult to debate religion as religion does not accept logic and is based on blind faith. Debate without logic is really impossible.

"His revelry call, "Is this Steelers country?" was met with boos from the crowd. One of the first rules of campaigning…know where you are."

I don't care if Santorum thinks this is Steelers country, as long as someone teaches him that America is not Taliban country.

4 Republican candidates, one they stole from the Libertarians because they are desperate for the extra votes, and 3 guys that have been unable to get elected to office anywhere for the last 8 yrs or more.
    • FactsMatter  •  3 mths ago
My take away from this article is that the candidates now want to show that they have a human side, that they're smitten by popular culture like the hoi polloi--even if they, the candidates, represent the 1%. Furthermore, I don't see why cons are complaining that this article biased against Republican candidates when Obama is referred to as "not so modest."
    • George  •  Burlington, Vermont  •  3 mths ago
How do these guys think that they are qualified to lead???
    • ub40  •  3 mths ago
If the GOP wants to stay in the game they better come up with a concrete jobs plan.
In the last debate the word "jobs" was spoken just six times while "contraception" was spoken eight times. Turn your helmets around, you've got'em on backwards.

HEY PEOPLE ! ! ! ...................I just heard a reporter state that driving less is making oil supplies pile up. ..............

HOWEVER, that is NOT going to get our gas prices to go down, because that reporter stated that oil producers are simply sending those piled up gas supplies to OTHER countries who willing pay ANY price to get the gas.

ALSO, I got a facebook email yesterday from Michael Brune (Director of Sierra Club).........Michael was in an interview with an oil industry guy on CNBC..... the oil industry guy told Michael that [more] oil drilling will NOT bring the price of gas down.

So people.........STOP yelling for more oil drilling -- that is NOT going to bring down gas prices.

Yell FOR more investments in environmental energy sources / alternative energy sources.........like switchgrass / CELLULOSIC ethanol / a Mexican plant that grows like Kudzu, and has the natural sugars to convert into gas alcohols, plus MANY OTHER alternative energy sources being discovered every day ! ! !

All this shows what horrible, incapable people we now have to run this country, to report the news, to teach our children, to protect us, etc. Everybody has reached their highest level of incompetence. That's what is sad.
