The Tea Party Hit List for 2012

    Spinners and Winners

In Texas, conservative Ted Cruz is looking for a Marco Rubio-esque victory. Like Rubio, Cruz came out of nowhere to challenge an established Republican candidate for the Senate nomination.

The similarities are striking: Rubio's father came from Cuba to the U.S. in 1958 and got a job as a bartender; Cruz's father came from Cuba in 1957 and got a job washing dishes; Rubio is 40, Cruz is 41; Rubio took on a powerful governor, Cruz is taking on a powerful lieutenant governor.

Ted Cruz is the whole package, says Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, a conservative group with links to the Tea Party. "He's got the values, he's got the resume of someone that has always fought for these ideas, he's got the charisma, and he's willing to burn a little shoe leather getting elected and it's got to be that combination."

Cruz has already raised $4 million - a staggering sum for an underdog.

Conservative activists are also trying to topple Senators Orrin Hatch and Richard Lugar, the two most senior Republicans in the Senate. In Indiana, State Treasurer Richard Mourdock is looking to take down Lugar. Over in Utah, recently resigned State Senator Dan Liljenquist is trying to topple Hatch.

These battles pit Republican against Republican, which have the potential to hurt the party's chances of taking back the Senate.

"Well sometimes you got to clean house," said Kibbe. "Sometimes you got to bring in new energy. If you have a firm that's failing, sometimes you go to bring in new management, new ideas, that's what we're doing."

It's a Tea Party's power test, whether any of these three end up in the U.S. Senate.

I wonder if any of the Tea Party candidates would agree to term limits....
      • leea 3 mths ago

      • VS 3 mths ago
Lonnie, for being as "educated" as you are..... "excellent" argument.... your presentation could not be more eloquent.

      • rudolph 3 mths ago

Government at all levels needs to be deflated and brought back to reality. We're constantly being bombarded by the 'Obesity of America' scare these days; no one seems to notice that government is the unhealthiest, most obese American of all.
    • Ed  •  Boise, Idaho  •  3 mths ago
Clean house indeed, in both parties! neither one is what they were 30 years ago, too many career politicians in Washington. It is our fault the voting public, we keep re-electing them!
      • Linda 3 mths ago
amen and too high of a retirement for the actual time they spend in chambers
      • kavedaddy 3 mths ago
I agree Ed but more often than not it's a choice between the lesser of two evils. It'd be really cool if in November the people took a stand and voted a bunch of 3rd party candidates into office.
      • Jack Hartshorn 3 mths ago
same thing I've always said, we're the ones that keep putting these jokers back.
    • Garry  •  Owensboro, Kentucky  •  3 mths ago
You need term limits. However we need to get rid of those lucrative retirements they have as well. The average person does not have a clue as to what their entitlements are. It costs us dearly for people that have only been in a couple of terms.
      • Jon 3 mths ago
Did you read the article that showed something like 200 members listed "public servant" listed as their occupation
      • needin-changes 3 mths ago
Gary, there is one large problem with setting term limits on congress... lobiests. The lobiests will be the only ones who actually understand how the governement works and they will definately make us all pay for not having some veterans left to hold them off.
      • Rotten 3 mths ago
Nope Needin, the opposite is true. Lobbying firms are full of ex-congressional staffers becuase they have access to their former bosses. The newbies have less "former" staffers, therefore less exposure to lobbiests.

With the economy in the toilet and many Americans trying to get by it makes me sick to my stomach to hear about the huge sums of money spent on political campaigns. What a country we've devolved into.
      • xdreamartist 3 mths ago
Obama will spend hundreds of millions of dollars. All his backers are the banksters.
      • que382 3 mths ago
And so what about good ole Mitt? I guess u forgot that "Wall Street" and the Chamber of Commerce is throwing thier support for Good ole Mitt. And the Koch brothers are spending a fortune to win back the White House.

The president can only serve two terms...congress, no limit...what's wrong with this picture?
    • WildBillCody  •  Binghamton, New York  •  3 mths ago
It's not term limits that need to be imposed, it is the absolute out-lawing of lobbyists that need to be imposed, but then some rich politician will whine that it is against "Free speech" and the supreme court will go right along with it.
    • RD  •  Buckfield, Maine  •  3 mths ago
There are term limits in any society such as ours. It is called get of your butt and vote.
    • Robert C  •  Pine Hill, New York  •  3 mths ago
Voters can impose term limits just by refusing to support any politician after 2 terms

      VOTE THEM ALL OUT!
    • Rough Dog  •  North Platte, Nebraska  •  3 mths ago
This country needs new voices that do not belong to the republicans and democrats. These two partys have conspired to control the country long enough. There are only 535 people in the congress of the US and the people have let them become the conscience and morality of this country. Think about it. These are politicians. Their only gods are themselves. They pay lip service to the needs of the population but only as far as it takes to get them votes. They will lie and cheat and steal and pass laws that make it easier for them and their backers to get rich. If you are looking for honesty from these people you are lost.
    • Roger  •  3 mths ago
anybody for term limits?? I know none of these politicians would be for that, so the only option left is, vote them out!
    • CastleBravo15MegaTon  •  Clinton, Iowa  •  3 mths ago
This kind of vitriol venom spewing in these comments (of both political leanings) is exactly what is wrong in Washington D.C.. Before we expect better of our elected officials, maybe we to expect better from our selves first.

To Underwatervulcan: Combat Infantry Badge, ARCOM, AAM, for service while under fire. So, watch you call puzzzy. I have EARNED the right to my opinion.
    • SCCWB  •  Albany, Georgia  •  3 mths ago
It's time for a COMPLETE turnover in ALL of congress, then impose term limits.
