The Coca-Cola drinks you won’t find in U.S. stores

While "Mexican Coke" continues to surge in popularity across the United States, there are some 3,500 other products produced by Coca-Cola in more than 200 counties, most of which you'll never have the chance to see or taste. Via Mental Floss, here are some of the more popular Coke varieties that aren't likely to turn up on U.S. shelves anytime soon:

    1. The Wellness: Available only in Japan, this unflavored soda is specifically marketed as "Beauty drinks designed for women who want to look their best at all times."

    2. Tiky: Extravagant advertising promises apparently aren't limited to American audiences. This pineapple-flavored soda sold in Guatemala, promises to "enhance your positive attitude and release your inner child." The ad copy doesn't spell out just how the drink's rather non-mystical ingredients (carbonated water, sugar, citric acid, artificial pineapple flavor, FD&C Yellow #5 and #6 preserved with sodium benzoate) will extricate your true, childlike self.

    3. Smart: The Chinese government may still impose strict limitations on personal expression, but it does permit the sale of this beverage, targeted at children and teens with a "fun, non-conforming personality." It's also one of the first soft drinks that Coca-Cola has marketed exclusively for China. Smart can reportedly be found in some corners of the U.S. market and is available in such flavors as coconut, apple banana and watermelon.

    4. Jaz Cola: Coke's brand has become synonymous with Western culture and has created seemingly countless examples of American artwork. In the Philippines, Jaz Cola--specially designed to appeal to inhabitants of the nation's middle island--is reportedly serving a similar purpose.  On its website, Coke claims that "the success of this locally produced soft drink has fueled Visayan pride among its teen consumers."

    5. Café Zu: The soft-drink giant doesn't target all its products at the teen market. In Thailand, this "ready-to-drink canned coffee" is specifically targeted to "hard-working males" aged 25-35 and comes with an extra dose of ginseng.

High fructose corn syrup has made sodas in the US undrinkable. Even the Pepsi Throwback is less sweet than Coke is now.

"Mexican Coke" is da'bomd. If you don't know, in a time before HFCS (High-fructose corn syrup) Coke (and other sodas) was made with real sugar and it taste much better than soda's made with HFCS. If you come across it give it a try.

Pepsi markets their cane sugar formulas as "FLASHBACK", and they sell out overnight here. Especially the Mountain Dew. The carbonation is somehow just *more* in the sugared versions. They are the bomb.
      • Cailey 6 mths ago
They also sell Mountain Dew Throwback. They had a Dr Pepper Throwback as well. Both are made with real sugar instead of HFCS.
      • Lindsey 6 mths ago
I agree. I love the Pepsi throwbacks. It definitely tastes better... and I also have to admit I miss how Pepsi used to look in the 90s =P

I gave up Coca-Cola about 6 years ago and lost 30 pounds. I have now lost my craving for it. In spite of this, I do have fond memories of drinking Mexican Coke while on vacation back in the 70's and 80's. That was some good stuff.
      • Me 6 mths ago
Please, you know you weren't drinking coke in the 70's n 80's, you were snorting it!

I have not heard of or seen Mexican Coke. How is it different from regular Coke? I spend a week in Mexico every year, and I only see regular Coke there, in both food stores and restaurants. While Vanilla Coke and Pepsi have been out, you can also order Chocolate Coke in some restaurants such as Johnny Rockets, and even a few years ago at TGIF restaurants. I think that Coke and Pepsi should also try selling this in bottles and cans in food stores. You can try it at home by mixing chocolate syrup with your cola. I wish Coke and Pepsi still sold them in Vanilla like they used to, though you can still find Vanilla Coke in small bottles and cans at some stores

Mexican Coke, and New Zealand still use the pre-1985 formula with sugar. In 1985 in USA and Canada they started using high fructose corn syrup instead.

Mexican Coke is popular in the southwest mostly, and some scattered cities in America. It is usually sold in 500mL glass returnable bottles.

I noticed on my trips to Mexico, you don't order Diet Coke. You order Lite Coke. But since all the mess they're having there, I just stay in Texas and drink my Diet Cokes.(yeah, I know. It's not good for my health. Bite me.)

When you buy Mexican Coke (or Pepsi) you are buying a product that was made in Mexico. It is usually cheaper in price, too, because labor prices are less in Mexico? Remember? Our jobs went to Mexico and China, etc? So when you buy these products you help to take away more jobs in the US. At least buy US goods when you can!

What about "Crest Bitter Lemon" sold by Coke in Uganda? We brushed our teeth with it when I was working in Kampala (I didn't trust local water - even bottled). It's like drinking a Sprite without the sugar!

Bring back original Coca-Cola that everyone grew up with! It does not taste the same anymore!!!!!
      • Jasmine 6 mths ago
You do realize the original Coca-Cola had cocaine in it right? So naturally it wouldn't taste the same anymore....
      • Malice 6 mths ago
You do realize Jello is talking about the early 80's formula right? I doubt anyone old enough to have had CocaCola w/cocaine is still alive.

This is nothing new. Coca-Cola and Pepsi, like alcohol manufacturers, buy up smaller drink companies to enhance their bottom line. This doesn't mean that Coke and Pepsi believe in the product's claims; it's more of a cultural thing.

Any of these drinks are fine and dandy as long as they make up no more than 30% of my drink. The rest should consist of two ice cubes and 70% rum.

Coke de Mexico is available in cases of 24 glass bottles at Sam's Club and Costco here in the Chicago area. It usually goes for about $19. Besides the glass bottle which seems to make anything taste better than an aluminum can the Cokes from Mexico is made with real Cane Sugar instead of the high fructose corn syrup. Which what Coke was made with in the U.S. prior to 1985. So if you remember Coke tasting better years ago, and those years ago date back to the early 80's or before then you are probably right, it did taste much better.
So while $19 for 24 bottles is a bit expensive compared to the $6 - $8 per 24 can deals you can find out there, take my advice and treat yourself with a real tasty blast from your past.
Maybe if enought people demand it they will start making it with real cane sugar here again. And maybe we can bring back returnable bottles. It would be worth the hassle if we could get real Coke at a decent price once again.

      6. Cola Burka. Marketed in Middle Eastern countries, this brand of Coke is marketed to Arab women who want to experience a bit of western culture. It's a girl's way of announcing, "I like to be flirtatious, but I don't really want to risk being stoned to death."
    • Dedly Edly  •  6 mths ago
I'm still waiting for them to accept the ideas I submitted to them several years ago. One is for the holidays - Candy Cane Coca-Cola - though it's easily made by, yep, putting a candy cane in a can/bottle/glass of Coke.

The other is to add banana flavour (either extract or banana-flavoured pop) to Vanilla Coca-Cola. The overall taste is pretty good but it's the advertising jingle that sells it:

"Try the new Coca-Cola Banana. Thought up by some nut in Ca-na-da." (to the tune of Copa Cabana.

Apologies to all those who just read that and will now have that running through their heads for the next several weeks. :-)

Everyone knows about "mexican coke" ;)

Does anyone else have problems with Coke in the plastic 2 and 3 liter bottles tasting like plastic or even a cigarette smoke like taste? I can't stand to buy coke in plastic bottles because of the taste - even the smaller 12 and 16 oz or 1/2 liter have a bad taste.
Pepsi in the plastic bottles doesn't have that taste, to me anyway.
