Underwater dog photography reveals new animal perspectives

Animal photographer Seth Casteel has been getting a lot of attention for his series of pictures depicting dogs underwater While all of the photos are impressive, what's most interesting (or disturbing) is how the photos combine the childlike delight of these dogs with what looks like terrifying scowls on their faces as they hone in on their play toy targets. But as great as those pictures are, there's an accompanying video posted online that might be even better.

Casteel posted a video of "Nevada the Diving Dog," a Border Collie determined to fetch a tennis ball as it descends to the bottom of a swimming pool. One unusual aspect of the underwater filming is the way it almost appears like Nevada is about to run out of breath before slowly paddling his way back to the surface. And sure enough, it takes Nevada a few tries but he does eventually get the ball at the bottom of the swimming pool.

It's only scary if they're making those faces while running after you. Nice pics, I love dogs!
      • turtlewannabee 3 mths ago
that first pic is just classic!
      • Zoey 3 mths ago
I agree! Though, I understand, how people can be afraid of those faces. Even though MY dog has bit me a few times(MY fault), Lol! I still don't fear those faces. Even FROM an unknown dog. x]

If the dog is running before you, it's scary to the people the dog is approaching too.
    • Jim  •  3 mths ago
If you had to grab a ball under water with your mouth, what would you look like? lol ; )
      • TK 3 mths ago
I'd look like a drowning victim soon....
      • Zoey 3 mths ago
I wouldn't do that! xD I don't like water. =/ Let alone, swimming.
    • RH  •  3 mths ago
Part of the "scowling" is due to the pressure of the water forcing their lips back as they lunge for the ball. Part of it is that they have to open wide to get a grip on the ball. I don't interpret any of it as viciousness without other indications.

as you say, it requires a lot of force to move an object through the water, and the dog's lips aren't as stiff as their teeth. hee hee.
        .
Steve Irwin found out the hard way he could not move very fast underwater when the stingray stabbed him. On land - with only air resistance - he was very fast. In the water he did not account for the water resistance when he got close to the stingray.

        Get a grip, Andrew !

This is beautiful play. There's nothing terrifying or disturbing about it.

Unless you are the Ball. or other creature they are diving for. Like a duck.

"God" had nothing to do with it. "God" is a figment of your imagination.

25 or so years ago I learned that my English Bulldog "Troubles" was a diving dog, I threw a rock into about 7 ft. of water at the river and she brought it right back.....She would swim down and get it everytime from that day on.....This article brought the memories back.....Nice.

one of the best feelings is when you go to a persons house and their dog comes and sits by you....in that "hey, this guys alright!" kinda' way.

Go to the link in the first sentence of the first paragraph to see about 20 images of diving dogs. They're so funny, because the water is causing their mouths and eyes to expand so unnaturally. But, they're very cool images.
    • I Like Turtles  •  3 mths ago
Those dogs look insanely ferocious in those pictures with their lips curled back and teeth showing. Very cool pictures to see what the little mutts look like when they are retrieving under water.

The Cheyenne elders (er...not the senior citizens of a Wyoming city) say that for 50,000 years Dog has labored to domesticate Man. Any shortcoming is not the fault of Dog.
    • Ron  •  Tampa, Florida  •  3 mths ago
Eric Pfeiffer definitely doesn't know much about dogs. When biting anything they pull their lips out of the way to avoid biting them. If you look in a dogs mouth, they have a pretty impressive set of choppers. We're lucky to have this species as a friend.

I had a Boston terrier, and he would literally dive under water and pick up rocks with his mouth in our lake and then swim up to the surface and bring them to shore. And lets get one thing straight, these rocks were not pebbles, they were the size of softballs, even bigger.
    • Carolyn L  •  3 mths ago
I remember a while back seeing a video with sharks swimming close to the shore and two dogs diving after the sharks and the sharks fled? Now I know why. Seeing something like that must have terrified those sharks! LOL !!
