Drone pilot finds “river of blood” outside Dallas meatpacking plant

A photo taken by a drone pilot outside a Dallas meat plant

A drone pilot hobbyist in Dallas stumbled across a river of blood coming from a large meatpacking plant. The small drone plane had a camera equipped, which captured images of the red river, suspected of being made of pig blood from the plant

"I was looking at images after the flight that showed a blood red creek and was thinking, could this really be what I think it is? Can you really do that, surely not?" the pilot tells sUAS News. "Whatever it is, it was flat out gross.  Then comes the question of who do I report this to that can find out what it is and where it is coming from."

The pilot, who has asked to remain anonymous, was put in touch with the Texas Environmental Crimes Task Force, who began monitoring the plant for violations. "Any time there is some type of discharge into the Trinity River… especially from an environmental standpoint, this is a real concern," Health and Human Services chief Zach Thompson told sUAS News. "I think they discovered a secondary pipe again is my understanding, so the question is who installed the pipe and why was it there."

The drone hobbyist says he captured the footage from the plant using only a point and shoot camera and a $75 airframe.

Too many regulations, right Republicans? These people can regulate themselves, right?

I scrolled down the river for miles on these google map coordinate 32.751412,-96.788113. I found that this river, likely is the source of water for all sorts of crops in the surrounding area. Whether or not the blood is still saturated into the water all these miles I do not know!

"Who installed the pipe and why is it there?"

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that the meatpacking plant installed it to dispose of blood in the river...but like I said, that's just a guess.
      • Teresa 4 mths ago
        I think that's a great guess

I think the different protectection agencies should hire you to do the investigations. You've found more evidence by guessing then they do by actually investigating!

Explain this : "discovered a secondary pipe again ".
      A second pipe ?
      Again ?
      • Mike 4 mths ago
Secondary- as in not primary. Not the same thing as second. But, again?
      • Rick 4 mths ago
Again? means more than 1 secondary pipe found during previous inspections.
      • Jason 4 mths ago
Chances are, the primary pipe led to a septic system that failed long ago (probably not sized for the operation).... the secondary pipe would be a system bypass. This is all speculation, but it is not uncommon for an operation like this to use a septic style system to dispose of the process fluids.

I went to the site on Sunday afternoon. It reeks of pig feces and the natural limestone bottom of this creek is coated with a red rusty substance. I shot a video of the actual discharge after the warrant was served. Three days later. It still smelled bad. Awful. The trench where the water was discharged was packed with tons of blonde animal hair. I'm guessing pig hair. You can plug in fF2r6BTWY2Y to see it on youtube or google. You can see the hair matted down in the clumps of feces. It's not dirt you are seeing but organic remains. Sucks because this illegal dumping entering the Trinity contaminates the Trinity Aquifer which enters the Edwards Aquifer that Austin and San Antonio depend on for water. The surface water enters the Houston water supply downstream. It's alleged that the packing plant was discharging 900,000 gallons of waste a month into the stream.

        Finally, an intelligent post.
      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
Not intelligent but I have personally been to the spot in question to see it myself. I wanted to see if the reports were really true. I have kayaked in the area and the city of Dallas has spent millions of dollars on a new kayak park just 100 yards upstream. I'm angry and literally a victim of what they have done since I was exposed directly to the pollution.

all of those people living near or even miles away from that river are at risk from all kinds of foul bacteria and pestilence that'll thrive in that mess... there's a reason open sewers aren't a good idea.

      • CONCERNED CITIZEN 4 mths ago
        That comes from Trinity River.
      • Alexander Gelland 4 mths ago
Miles? Seems like a bit of an over exaggeration. While the blood in the water is certainly disgusting, the blood is easily filtered out afte municipal water treatment. However, I think the acidity of the water from the blood gets too high and corrodes lead pipes, making the water contaminated anyway.
    • wajang1000  •  4 mths ago
Raises 2 questions: 1. Is there good drinking water in Dallas and 2. what brand is the meat here, since if they are guilty of this, you can imagine the shortcuts in the meat processing which lands up on your table.
      • Michael B 4 mths ago
Can you imagine how much their prices will go up to cover the cleanup and repair?
      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
        1. no, there is NO good drinking water is the Dallas metroplex! (in my opinion) I think it smells like lake water when its running from the tap. Lots of filters and bottled water here!
        2. I googled meatpacking plants and found two companies along the Trinity River. Dallas City Packing and Columbia Packing.
      • elfin 4 mths ago
Get real. How much does it really cost to NOT pour pig blood into a municipal water source? "Raising prices" IS NOT AN EXCUSE and I'm am sick to death of that argument.

For anyone who wonders why businesses are regulated, this is a great example. It cuts into profits if you have to play by the rules. The owner should be fined and liable for cleanup cost.
    • GeorgeFnWashington  •  4 mths ago
And who says corporations and industry can't be trusted to regulate themselves?
    • 1 Man  •  Houston, Texas  •  4 mths ago
If a company wants their airspace to be a no-fly zone, they should make sure they are obeying the laws. As the picture shows, it was taken over an a property next to the plant and shows the bloody discharge outside the plant property. Just because it is not on your property when it enters the enviroment does not mean you're not responsible for it.

My favorite part was "I think they discovered a secondary pipe AGAIN...". That tells me they were caught before dumping waste into the river. And, yes it is biodegradable, but so is the #$%$ in your toilet, would you like me to spread that on your toast?
    • mike  •  4 mths ago
Yep I looked it up on google earth, 2807 East 11th Street, Dallas, TX, there is so much blood in the creek that it has turned the sand bars red and when it gets to the Trinity River you can see the blood red water from the creek, as a retired Natural Resources Police Officers, I would say someone at the plant is going to be looking for a job, I am not sure if the blood would deplete the oxygen levels of the creek, but I would bet the other chemicals used in the processing would create a pretty large fish kill.

      Thank you

This greedy meat packing plant doesn't wanna pay for proper disposal even it it pollutes drinking water for millions of people. I'd bet that a lot of the workers are illegals and the CEO and upper management people roll in the dough.
    • SusieQ  •  Hearne, Texas  •  4 mths ago
For under 100 dollars, this 'source' uncovered a major criminal act of polluting waterways. We need to put him in charge of the budget, how ingenious can you get
    • Toefur  •  4 mths ago
And some think we should get rid of regulations. Big businesses will do the right thing, trust them...duh.
