Time-lapse video shows otherworldly desert sky — with dinosaurs

A clear view of the night sky is hard to come by, especially for those who live in cities.

This time-lapse video, "Borrego Stardance," does that and more. It also shows what the night sky might have looked like in the age of dinosaurs.

Filmed by Gavin Heffernan and his Sunchaser Pictures team, the video captures the star-filled summer sky in Borrego Springs, Calif.

The out-of-the-way desert town is about three hours south of Los Angeles — and is one of only four places to be certified a "Dark Sky Community" by the International Dark-Sky Association.

It is protected by the surrounding 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego State Park, and the night sky is preserved by regulating outdoor lighting.

Free from light pollution, the team shot “some of the clearest Milky Way footage we've ever captured,” Heffernan, who is based in Los Angeles, noted in an email to Yahoo News.

“This crazy hidden gem also boasts a number of amazing steel sculptures set against the night sky — dragons, dinosaurs, giant insects, wooly mammoths, and lots more,” he added.

Needless to say, the artwork, commissioned by Dennis Avery and created by sculptor Ricardo A. Breceda, adds an otherworldly backdrop to the stars.

The video was shot June 7-9, and includes footage of star trails and an effect Heffernan calls starscaping — “switching from stars to trails mid-shot.”

Bonus: A behind-the-scenes film shows how the time-lapse video was made.
