Train-hopping couple buried alive under coal

(Susan Artes/AP)A young couple hopping railroad cars across the country was found dead under a mound of coal at a Florida power plant.

Christopher Artes, 25, and Medeana Hendershot, 22, shared a passion for illegally hopping freight trains and traveling the country without a set plan. They had spent the past several months traveling across the country, including stops in Georgia, Illinois and Tennessee. They were hoping to stop for the winter in Florida to enjoy the warm weather.

"We were always worried about him. He always made so many bad decisions," Christopher's mother, Susan Artes, told the AP. "If he got an idea and something looked good to him, he would do it. He was always jumping into situations. This particular train was one of them. I'm sure they thought the train would go from one yard to another."

Sometime over the weekend the couple were killed when their train stopped at a local Florida power plant. When the railcars arrive, they open from the bottom, releasing their cargo several stories below into a waiting truck.

As the AP reports, officials at the plant are not sure if the couple was sitting on top of the coal when another load dropped, or if they were in a railcar that was dropping its payload. But they do know that Artes died from asphyxiation--meaning that he was likely buried alive. Hendershot died from blunt force trauma to the mid-section, meaning that she likely died from falling or by having coal fall on her.

"I don't recommend it and I encourage people not to do it," said Kevin Rice, who writes about his childhood train hopping on his website. "It was a great deal of fun and adventure but we could have gotten killed," said Rice.

The practice of stealing a free ride on a railcar, or freighthopping, has declined substantially over the past several decades. Though several websites, and even this article from Mother Jones last year, discuss alleged detailed primers on how to get away with the illegal practice.

During their trip, Artes and Hendershot took advantage of some modern conveniences, even as they were embracing a form of travel romanticized since the 1930s. For example, Artes would use his cell phone to call his mother three times a week, asking for directions to local truck stops, grocery stores and other points of interest.

"If he had to die so young, at least he died at a moment where he was on top of the world," Susan Artes said.

Having worked for a railroad for over 37 years I can tell you this is very dangerous. There are no telling how often these accidents occur

They actually CHOSE to ride in a coal car. If I were a train hopper (and I'm not since this isn't the 1930's) I would have waited for the next train. Maybe one hauling pillows.

lesson... never sit on top of a car carrying coals... best bet is a box car for safety and protection from the elements - and less visible.
      • Dixon 5 mths ago
Never ride a train unless you're in the cab of the Lead Engine. Trains are dangerous and shouldn't be viewed lightly. 36 years on the railroad has taught many hard lessons.

This a very stupid way to die, I always wonder why people would risk their lives doing crazy things, yet they will not give their lives to Christ, a decision that brings eternal live, everlasting happiness with no risk, even if you are killed for the gospel sake, it is gain, again I say no risk as those who die in the Lord are assured of immortality at the second coming of our soon coming King.

Just by writing about the joy to come my spirit yearns for that day.

Oh friends just read it for yourselves asking God to let His holy Spirit brings that joy to you right now

        Revelation 21:2-4

        King James Version (KJV)

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

My brothers and my sisters, if you are a infidel, an atheist, evolutionist or nothing at all, I know you would want to be there, In fact if money could purchase a lot in that city, many of you reading this right now, would pay any sum just to get a home there.

Beloved brothers and sisters, the cost is not cheap as it cost the only begotten son of God His life,, but for us to be there we don’t have to pay a dime. Jesus paid it all.

Will you accept Him as your Lord and Savior today? Doing so will definitely guarantee you eternal life.

May God bless America and the world.

"...at least he died at a moment where he was on top of the world."

Buried under a pile of coal doesn't qualify as "on top of the world"...

Wow, his mom even said, "We were always worried about him. He always made so many bad decisions. " I hate to sound callous but this is Darwin at work here, people. I want to say I wish his stupid girlfriend hadn't followed him into it but I guess that's just another example, huh?
      • Netty 4 mths ago
Yes, truly. Thank goodness he died. We don't want any more people who actually make the most of their lives by seeing the world around now do we? Things like bungee jumping, motor biking and skydiving are all pretty risky hobbies too but if someone dies doing it nobody calls that natural selection, it's a tragic accident.

And for the record, preceding something disgustingly heartless with 'I hate to sound callous' does not make it any less contemptible.

      • james 5 mths ago
Have you ever been anywhere in the states? And there is NO BETTER way to see the U.S. than by train...as a paying customer, or as a 'bo. I have done both. As for Europe, great places to visit, but as far as beautiful places, no where beats the U. S.
      • gale 5 mths ago
Yep I was right, no rails running to Europe!!!

I have known three professional hobos who have died because they hopped the wrong train. It's really sad news -- R.I.P.
    • Mac  •  5 mths ago
"We were always worried about him. He always made so many bad decisions," What the mother said is so funny(NOT in a hahahaha way.) It reminds me so much of my own adult son. If you look up 'bad decision' in a dictionary, you will see his picture. As a parent, there's really nothing you can do but watch the train wreck(pun intended), and hope they'll somehow come out unscathed.

Just don't give up. Keep trying to "guide" and most important of all make sure he knows you love him. Keep showing the love. Some people do pull out of "the fog of living" eventually after a few years. Good luck to you and your family.
