President must engage govt in economic policies: Tan Jee Say

Presidential candidate Tan Jee Say said on Thursday that a President who wants to be an effective unifying figure must engage the government on its economic policies.

This is because the current economic strategy is the "primary source of much unhappiness" among Singaporeans and could lead to a "deeply divided nation", reasoned the 57-year-old who was awarded the Certificate of Eligibility on Thursday.

For society to remain cohesive, such division must be "repaired without delay", said Tan at a talk titled Survival and Opportunities in an Uncertain World.

"There is much for the next president to do in this respect," he said.

To fulfill this task, the President must engage the government in formulating an "alternative economic philosophy that addresses the heart of Singaporeans' unhappiness," urged the trained economist.

But instead of delving into the specifics of economic policies, the President should focus on the big issues, such as whether the government should invest more in Singaporeans and provide adequate resources for their educational needs, he said.

While he acknowledged that such issues should "rightly" be handled by the government, Tan pointed out, "obviously Singaporeans are not happy with how the government is handling them and it has reached a point where the president needs to step in to heal the division and unify the nation.

"If the president is serious about unifying the nation, then he should look at it. That is my starting point. I am not saying the President replaces the Prime Minister," stated Tan.

He also touched on the influx of foreign workers, whom he said were competing with lower-skilled Singaporeans as well as those the middle-income professionals, managers, executives and technicians for jobs.

He highlighted the need for more investment in basic infrastructure such as health and education to create more jobs for Singaporeans.

On inculcating a "robust enterprise culture" among Singaporeans, Tan suggested that the Government withdraw its participation from businesses that the private sector can undertake.

Its influence in the private business, he said, "is not healthy for the long term development of businesses in Singapore as the bigger and well-supported government linked companies (GLCs) can crowd out private entrepreneurs".

He also raised a controversial idea of "ultimately disbanding" Temasek Holdings to allow for private enterprise to take over and "create a new buzz" for Singapore.

Tan had raised some of these ideas earlier when he stood as a candidate in the General Election in May under the Singapore Democratic Party banner.

When asked if his ideas were beyond the scope of the President's duties, Tan told Yahoo! Singapore he is "clear" on the President's powers as specified in the Constitution and he does not intend to reach beyond the Constitution.

He said, "I think I'm clear, I have read the Constitution. The fact that I'm interested means that I know what I'm in for."

TT is not suitable candidate as he has already proven he cant rise above partisan politics in his speeches the last few days, as these were in fact strong governmental propaganda of the working party.

When elected, one of the duties of the EP is to look after the welfare of the citizen. From observation and recent news, it seems apparent that Singaporean workers are being exploited by companies and also, government authorities. Look at the MOE's cutting of re-employed teachers' pay on the pretext that they are giving them lighter responsibilities and greater flexibility so that they would have more time for other things. Are they really given lighter workload is hard to ascertain. Also, many Singaporeans now are being employed on contract basis and this include those employed in the public sector. Being employed on this scheme, workers tends to lose many benefits like medical, for their immediate family members and some, even their bonuses are lesser. Promotion prospect is also dimmer as they are not really valued workers. The unions seems powerless to do anything or, they are also partisan to the employers.

Not only in the employment sector the workers are exploited, the consumers are also short-changed. Look at the electricity rates, when oil price rises, the rates goes up in tandem. But when oil price recedes, does it recede in tandem as well? Patrol companies can reduce petrol prices by two cents today, but will shoot up 3 cents one week later. It will continue in this manner and that is why you see prices going up and up.

Mr EP Sir (whoever is elected), do you know our cries? If your duty is to look after the welfare of Singaporeans, please do something to correct this imbalance, eradicate all exploitations and unscrupulous ways of doing business.

Tan Jee Say, you have my vote because you are the voice of many disgruntled Singaporeans. As you have pledged to donate your President's salary, it shows you understanding the meaning of public service. I applaud you for your courageous thought that Temasek Holdings should be disbanded. It will be an onerous task but if there is a will, there will be a way for you to succeed in disbanding Temasek Holdings, which feels like it belongs to the Lee family. I pray that you will use your influence to bring out favorable changes in Singapore. The real citizens of singapore are stressed, miserable and angry. Please help us.

Mr Tan Jee Say may have good intention and ideas how to mould and shape the elected Presidency but he knows as many of the people of this country that it is just not possible because under the present constituency it simply is 'a no goer' because policies are dictated in the parliament. I don't think with the current monopoly of power control he will be able or willing to voice indifference or change if he got elected. He'll in all probability be another lame duck for his own 'goodness' sake because lets face it they are not going to allow a loose canon disrupt their precious agendas. They'll get him one way or another.

I think the government is the cause for all this confusion,if you have a president elected by the people they will definitely expect him to speak up and challenge certain government policies because he will be signing the bill in to law
Don't create unnecessary confusion/election and wastage of not your money but our money, let us stick to the old system where the president is chosen by the ruling party and will work as per their advice.
Don't disturb the bee hive be happy you are still getting honey.

If you want answers to what happen to our reserves, vote him in. TT is being roped into this EP election because the Lee family doesn't want Singaporeans to know what's happening to our money as there are really not many people even those in the PAP will know what's going on with our reserves. Only those PAP members who are in their inner circle will know. Has any one wonder why are there so many foreign born turned Singapore citizens are chosen to become MPs? There is a reason why the Lee family are choosing these people have no attachment to this country or its people. Too many kept secrets which SIngaporeans will never know because they are just too stupid to think because they are just being blinded by things all that glitter.

One will only need to look at how our former President Ong Teng Chong was tried when he was the people's president while a yes man Puppet President was rewarded will millions of dollars and be honoured as 'A few Good Men'. In this country, morality has taken a back seat and this shown by the people in leadership. They are willing to do anything just for monetary gain and not bother about the little people. People are rewarded for the wrong reasons. Its only people like Rupert Murdoch who has no moral values would glorify Singapore. Like all leaders today, he just get his surbordinates to take the reaps while he is the ones who created the situations. Remember this Chinese saying, when the top is not straight, the bottom will be crooked. Don't blame the people for what's going out with Singapore. Who really created all these? Its the 'Few Good Men', right?

Its time for the people to take a stand to vote for the truth. We need to know what's happening to this country.
