Adorable rescue chihuahua will become a bionic canine

The idea of scientists implanting bionic body parts into a living creature is nothing particularly new, but we're willing to bet the fusion of nature and machine has never been as adorable as this: A chihuahua born with just three legs is about to become the cutest bionic creature on the planet.

Her name is Peggy Leg, and when an animal welfare organization called Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue received her at just five months of age, they immediately began searching for a way to give her a more normal life. As luck would have it, North Carolina State University was searching for a small canine to try out its new mechanical limb technology, and Peggy was the perfect match.

Peggy will soon visit the university for her first round of prosthesis operations which will allow her to walk as though she were born with all four legs fully intact. She'll need to make a total of up to four trips to the East Coast to complete her treatment, and the university hopes that her new mechanical limb will serve as a starting point for human testing.
