Air Swimmers balloon animals delight adults, terrify children, cats

If you're an adult, playing with balloons can get you some weird looks. Sure, they're fine for kids, but as a grown-up you're expected to conduct yourself in a slightly more dignified manner. So brace yourself while watching the Air Swimmers video above, as your maturity level is almost certain to take a dive.

Filled with helium and propelled by working tail fins, the floating fish move with an almost eery grace. They can be steered up, down, and side-to-side via a handheld infra red controller. Four AAA batteries are required — three in the controller and one in the fish — and a single helping of helium can supposedly keep the fish afloat for weeks at a time.

Two version of the Air Swimmers are currently available — a clownfish and shark — but with the immense popularity the innovative toys have received, we imagine this isn't the last we'll see of them. Despite preferring air to water, the fish have made quite a splash on the web, and both the manufacturer's website and associated toy outlets are noting extremely high demand for the $40 toys. If you fancy yourself a colorful clownfish, you can still pick one up online, but the shark version appears to be sold out at least for the next two weeks.
