Apple: iPhone 5 defect “normal”

For a device that's barely a week old, the Apple iPhone 5 sure has seen its share of controversies. Among the (arguably minor) issues experienced by the Apple faithful is a now-notorious purple haze artifact that appears when you try to take a picture that contains a lot of light. But don't expect a fix to come from Cupertino any time soon — a company representative says its violet flare is "normal behavior for the iPhone 5 camera."

Some believe the tinting is an inescapable side effect of the iPhone's new sapphire lens. When an Apple customer requested the company provide a fix for the issue, he was sent an email from AppleCare that essentially confirms that, yes, there is a purple problem, and no, don't worry, it's isn't a problem at all!

If you're irritated by the dramatic increase of the color purple in your life, you really don't have much in terms of options. Apple engineers suggest you "angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures." We have some non-Apple-approved suggestions to add: Learn to love the haze. Pretend it's an Instagram filter. Or simply make it a point to only photograph purple items — that way, the flare is an image enhancer.
