sa-630-iphone-4-630wApple enthusiast blog 9to5Mac is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed over-the-air updates are headed to the Verzion version of Apple's iPhone 4. Adding this feature would eliminate the need for iPhone owners to sync their handsets with the computer-based iTunes download service for updates to the phone's iOS operating system.
Android devices have utilized a remote updating system for some time, prompting users to download and install new versions of software wherever they might be. Apple's insistence on relying on iTunes to distribute updates has long been criticized, but this new feature would remedy that in short order. No word was given on whether Apple would (or could) match the feature, but as AT&T-based Android devices have no problem with remote updates, it seems like a definite possibility.
The feature is expected to be included with the next full version of the iOS operating system, iOS 5, which should be rolling out later this year. The download and installation of iOS 5 would, of course, still require a sync to iTunes, but each subsequent update could potentially be handled completely wirelessly. This news should make Verizon iPhone owners happy, especially since Apple has a bit of a sordid history with the carrier as far as timely updates go.
