Could an iPhone app cure your social anxiety?

A new program shows promise for those unable to cope

We recently reported on smartphone app Mobilyze, a program under development that's capable of diagnosing mental health issues. A team of researchers at Harvard University are working on the logical next step: A smartphone app that can help treat mental health issues — in this case, social anxiety.

The app uses a simple approach developed by an Australian psychologist. Users of the app are shown two different faces on their phone screen: One friendly and one hostile. The program merges the faces together, and then flashes a letter that you need to correctly identify.

It's believed that those with social anxiety tend to fixate on faces in the crowd who are hostile. The app helps break this fixation, re-training the brain and reducing anxiety.

Recent studies show that using the new smartphone app helped reduce subjects' anxiety by 22 points on a questionnaire, as compared to an 8-point drop experienced by a group who didn't use the app. But before you start trading in your doctor for an iPhone, it's important to note that not everyone believes that the app is special: A similar 22-point drop was experienced by a control group who looked at pairs of faces without the letter to distract them.

It could just be that the key to feeling better is simply the act of taking the initiative and doing something about your anxiety. According to one Chicago-area control group participant in the study, "I felt good about myself, that I was doing something for my issues, and a lot happened in those two months outside the study that could have helped."

Social anxiety? I have people anxiety. Just do not know how to have a conversation with anyone. Usually talk about the weather...gets all awkward, look at ground, nothing to say, even more awkward, say "Yep"...and then sigh...Not to mention I am shy and hate crowds, and really hate going out of my house. I am comfortable in my own house and I do not enjoy going out to eat, going to a theme park ect...What others call fun I call hell on earth. Because I do not know how to act around people, when I am inevitably forced into those situations, I always embarrass myself by saying or doing something stupid because I am so terribly nervous and anxious. That being said I fit the stereotypical "writer" who creates their own worlds, simply because they do not know how to experience them, enjoyably first hand. I love anything with a good story. Books, movies, shows, and my goal in life is to become a successful writer. Writing is my escape I guess.

yup, been going through the exact thing all my life...terrible feeling when you can't go anywhere without the idea your being judged all the time... I am on medication and therapy but doesn't seem to help. I've tried to change my thinking but it's not as easy as some say. Best of luck to you all.

Actually those with social anxiety do not focus on ANYONE in a crowd because they are too busy worrying about how they appear to others. This shrink is a #$%$

Put every event you're exposed to into perspective. I had a problem even returning items to the store. So before I leave the house or interact with someone I always think about what will happen before I go. If it's to return an item to the store I say to myself what will happen with the cashier or manager. If it's to speak with my child's teacher I do the same thing. It has helped me so much. Pathetic, I know, but it helps.

What about the anxiety that your children will starve because you just spent $800 on a phone.

Nokia spent billions to improve reliability and reduce parts count so they could sell phones for under $30, then along comes Apple and convinces people they need to spend $800 on a phone with which most people use only a small % of the power.

Goes to show that efficiency isn't the primary factor even for phones. Imagine if men picked wives that way, went for flashy looks instead of the one who is best suited to be a mother.

Someone offers hope that something that holds people back can be helped more easily, something that PARTICULARLY effects people drawn to the geekier thing in life, and you get angry? What do you love and care about that WE can make fun of, #$%$BTW, I own a zune, a pc, hate itunes, and have no smart phone of any make or model, but even I can tell that you are talking out of your #$%$

That app wouldn't cure my social anxiety disorder. I don't focus on hostile faces. Example: If I'm giving a speech in front of a class or become the focus of attention in some way, I feel like everyone is looking at me, not like I'm looking at everyone so I become very self conscious. If you understand that, then you understand my social anxiety.
      • SteveM 3 mths ago
um, if youre giving a speech in front of a class, every IS looking at you :D
      • Destiny Clarice 3 mths ago
Yes, but I'm not thinking about them, I'm thinking about them judging me.
      • Destiny Clarice 3 mths ago
In other word, I fixate on what they are thinking about me.

If I had an iphone I'd give it a try. My social anxiety is strange because I am a social person, but some settings will trigger a bad panic attack and it's irrational and just plain awful. I wish I knew how to stop it from happening.
