Detroit Police won’t respond to burglar alarms unless you have proof of a crime

An overabundance of false alarms means unverified calls will now be ignored

We've all seen the ads for home security and business-minded alarm systems — you might even have one installed at home — and in some cases they can be a godsend. In Detroit, however, the ridiculously high rate of false 911 calls generated by these systems has led the Detroit Police Department to demand that alarm companies verify crimes before requesting an officer.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. announced that as of August 22, the department would no longer be responding to burglar alarm calls unless the caller has proof that a law is being broken. The DPD receives a bounty of alarm notifications from home and business security firms every day, but a staggering 98% of the calls turn out to be false alarms — just one out of every 50 reveals an actual break-in.

These erroneous requests for officers put a drain on department resources, and can delay police response time to much more legitimate emergencies. To support its decision, a DPD press release noted that roughly 30 other police departments in big cities have instituted similar "verified response" programs since 1991, including Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Milwaukee.

Many businesses employ security staff to verify automated alarms, but homeowners may find their options considerably more limited. Some security companies already offer methods of verification such as live video feeds, but these options can be considerably more pricey than a standard alarm system. Though if the extra expense ensures a timely police response, it's likely worth it.

Yeah. But they'll break in when you aren't there and not only steal all your other stuff but your .40 caliber too.

This will last until somebody winds up in the morgue because police failed to respond!
      .
Hey, how about a "false alarm fee"? If the call turns out to be a false alarm, the facility, home, etc., has to pay a $50.00 fine! That would help curb false alarms, raise a bucket of money for the PD's, and/or lead to a ton of litigation against alarm companies because their systems are too sensitive!
      .
Best bet: have a confirmation call placed to the place triggering an alarm (this is an easy call to the customers from the alarm companies), if the call is not answered, or a "coded password" is not provided by the person answering the phone at the alarm site, then the P.D. is alerted to respond! A real no-brainer, but it requires a live person to be present at the alarm company to checkout the alarm signal, and provide the appropriate response to alert or not alert the police department.

This is what happens when Coxsocceratives fire all the first line defenders as if this is cost efffective in the long run. I hope only that consocceratives are harmed by this.

What are they breaking into? Vacant homes? It is a dying city.

Intersting how the picture shows a white guy breaking in.
      • Scott 9 mths ago
Yep. use a black guy, and it is racism!- despite possibly being factual. Crooks come in all races, but the white are least likely to complain about the racism. We just get over it.

at least it put them in a better light than them having a pocket full of candy in a school yard

hmmmmm.......yeah, he looks pretty shady to me; looks like a junkie too. You can always tell crooks by looking at them, right? Not like DHS, among many other government agencies, who have been stealing for who knows how long, but they look honest, right?

I tell friends not to go in that hell hole for any reason unless you have a carry permit and are trained to use their gun. Many of the people who use to live there are moving out to the northern burb's and they are bringing crime right along with them, soon the whole state will be a hell hole if the trend continues. Oh and yes the Detoilet Cops are a joke all you have to do is look at them to tell fat/lazy/dumb altough there are some good ones but far and few between.

Fortunately there isn't much crime in Detroit.
      • Edmarc 9 mths ago
That's because no one wants to live there anymore.

No point in having an alarm system there. Individules must protect there own property. The police can only act after the crime as usual, no such thing as preventive action or just in time action. We are own our own people, just proves the police nor the government can or will protect you.

Detroit's policies have destroyed that city and are now destroying the country.

A gun is only useful if you are home when they break in, otherwise it just becomes something else for the criminal to steal!

When the alarm goes off, the gate for the starved Lion raises. Officer, there was a break in, but my pet lion ate the evidence.

My preference for a security system is a pump shotgun. Better yet get a Great Dane that stays in the house so the burglars will bet a nice surprise. As far as the comment about not having guns so the criminals can't steal them; that is like not getting a drivers license so drunk drivers can't hurt you. Most criminals "case" a scene before acting. Big Dog on campus is not a good sign for a crook. Also, anything below a .40 caliber handgun is just for plinking.

Detroiters - Just be thankful that you don't live in Chicago, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. Those cities still make it very difficult to obtain a gun to protect yourself and your family. Thank the founding fathers for the second amendment.

I suppose the criminals won't bother running away anymore when the alarm goes off, and the voice says we are notifying the police.

This article is 100% ACCURATE. I've been in law enforcement for 15 years, and the article is correct, in my experience, 98% of all the business and home alarms are false calls. Alarms companies collect millions of dollars from citizens, to ONLY monitor alarms. The police do all of the physical work, by responding to alarms, checking perimeter of buildings and establishing whether a crime occurred. Now who pays for those false alarms...WE DO. Alarm companies should not just monitor, but provide physical security to check alarms and IF they find a legit crime, then they should be trained to maintain the scene until police arrive.

Michigan -- Detroit, particularly -- has been ravaged by the economic downturn, and inability of the Big Three to stay competitive (blame unions if you want to, but when Detroit made cars that people wanted to buy, they also made money).

Its real estate market is non-existent. Its leadership has long been corrupt.

Like many Midwest cities, wonderful people live there.

I just don't know how it gets turned around....
    • N-N  •  9 mths ago
And ya'll thought Detroit was bad. Wait until the criminals learn of this new policy. Detroit is the real hell hole of the Midwest.
    • jay  •  9 mths ago
Get a gun and learn how to use it. Alarms do no good when someone breaks in and kills your family before the cops arrive. When seconds matter the cops are just a few minutes away.

Detroit still has a Police Department?
    • Dan  •  9 mths ago
Just call it in as a traffic violation, three police cars and 6 officers will show up to give you a ticket and drug test!
