U.S. law requires electric car manufacturers to add fake engine sounds to their vehicles to help alert pedestrians and other drivers of the vehicles presence. But how, exactly, do you create a fake engine noise that sounds satisfyingly real? That's precisely the challenge that Audi engineers have been working to tackle.
The sound created for the Audi e-tron electric vehicle concept car isn't just a recording of a loud, gas-guzzling engine. It's actually a precisely calculated noise that corresponds to the speed of the motor, the speed of the car, and other factors. In short, this electric car is designed to sound just like a regular vehicle, no matter how you drive it.
Audi created the simulated sound using an advanced acoustical testing facility, which you can see in the video above. By filtering out all other ambient sounds, engineers were able to precisely measure the sound of the vehicle and fine tune it until your ears are completely fooled.
