Your future gadgets may have bendy, edgeless displays

In the future, bendy, twisty phones and tablets may be common options when buying new devices. Samsung has long been working on flexible gadgets and even showed off prototypes at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Nokia envisions an elastic phone in its future, as well. Now, a company called Atmel has unveiled a new touch sensor that electronics manufacturers can use to make contortionist gadgets with edgeless screens.

A sensor is the component of a display that's responsible for touch response. You may never have heard of Atmel before, but it supplies Samsung with sensors for the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tab, among other devices. While the video above shows only a concept tablet, Atmel's bendy sensor is way past the concept stage: The company has started sampling it to select gadget manufacturers.
