Honda’s Asimo is now autonomous, brings us closer to robot takeover

Sure, other humanoid robots can do pushups, play ping-pong, and tweet, but Honda's Asimo remains one of the most recognizable names among the lot. The pint-sized bot has been around for quite a while, but it's recently received an update from Honda that equips it with the world's first autonomous behavior technology. In other words, Asimo can now move on its own with no need for human input.

In order to make Asimo an autonomous machine, Honda had to determine and meet three necessary factors. The first is to make it perfectly balanced so it can walk like a human without toppling over. Next is to give it the capacity to recognize movements around it using sensors. And last is to make it capable of deciding on a behavior appropriate to its surroundings, in order to avoid things like bumping into people and objects.

Working toward making Asimo useful in everyday settings, Honda has retooled the robot with a variety of new features. The new Asimo can recognize a particular voice even while people are speaking simultaneously. It can also predict the direction a person is headed so it can quickly take an alternate path. At 13.2 lbs. lighter than the previous model and with a new pair of stronger legs, it's now quicker on its feet and can run backward or continuously hop on one leg.

Its lower limbs aren't the only ones upgraded — the new Asimo is so deft at using its human-like hands that it can twist caps off glass bottles and hold soft paper cups without crushing them to a pulp. It can even use sign language gestures that usually require complex finger movements. Of course, it will take much more than these improvements to make Asimo prepared for more practical applications, but this move is definitely a step in the right direction.

That robot is insane. I work at auto warranty company US Direct Protect and hardly ever get claims on Honda`s.

Fast forward 75yrs after 20 upgrades: Asimo top running speed is 500 mph and can bench press and curl 1500 lbs indefinitly. With an exoskeleton that is almost indestructable it is also impervious to extreme tempertures and shockwaves. Its power source is solar and nuclear.

Once on a planet far away, there were intelligent people who developed robots in their image. Eventually the robots were made self sufficient and became more intelligent. Over time, the people were wiped out because their planet died. Before the planet's demise, the people found a planet that was light years away, but they couldn't get there in their lifespan, so they sent many of the robots instead. However, the robots needed power and the power source they brought with them was limited. Recognizing their weakness, the robots used their intelligence to create an organic computer with an organic body, both of which could evolve and recharge its needs from the organic life that existed on this planet. After the power source the robots brought with them exhausted itself, the robots could no longer function, but the organic robots they had created survived. They continued to evolve and became intelligent biological beings, who molded the new world to fit their needs. Eons later these new biological beings used their intelligence and the resources of the new world to create robots in their image.

If their robot is really that good. why didn't Japanese companies use their robots in the nuclear power plant accident?

Asimo and it's ilk are not yet fearful, but a number of companies are developing exoskeletons for the military, similar to the recent motion picture, "Ironman", only for real. Check it out on Google or Wikipedia!

They keep upgrading Asimo, making the robot stronger...where are they going with this. What will the next upgrade be? And the one after that, and after that.

What an absolutely STUPID headline. Nothing but a cheap attention getter to fuel the fears of the technophobes. The author(s) of this piece should be ashamed of themselves. AI is nowhere developed to the point where self awareness - which equates to independent thought - in a robot is even remotely possible. The fact that some autonomous action is possible does not equate to intelligence. Perhaps in 20 years or so things might be different.

Almost as creepy as those FEMA robots that look like transformers.

Why does FEMA need those things anyway?

I'll be impressed when they make a robot available for your average consumer. It's cool that they have Asimo and have made it able to do all these things. But, it's not that impressive until I have one doing my cooking and cleaning.

Let's hope there is some work being done programming these "automonous" machines with Asimov's "Three laws of Robotics".
      • Brian 6 mths ago
How'd those 3 laws work out in the latest version of Asimov's I Robot with Will Smith?
      • ScottyT 6 mths ago
The Will Smith version of I, Robot is very different (and worse) than the book.

Give it an atomic power supply, make it bullet proof, and teach it to kill terrorist.
If it doesn't turn on us, and kill us all, it could be a useful.
